Picking up on tatatatao’s point, last summer we bought an enormous secondhand, restored Turkish rug on Etsy. I was overwhelmed by the choices so ended up selecting a company that had great reviews and wrote to them with my measurements. They promptly sent me about 12 options to choose from. Very reasonable prices and free postage. Best fun was watching it on a website, travel via courier from Turkey to Germany, Netherlands to New Zealand and then our remote location in the Marlborough Sounds. Eight days total! It was vacuum packed (somehow I’d imagined a great rolled up carpet arriving but it wasn’t like that at all). We are really thrilled with the quality and colour and it’s great to think about its previous life in someone else’s home.

This is NOT a good idea for the elderly. Slips, trips and falls are one of the greatest causes of hospitalisation among the elderly. It is very easy to catch your feet on the edge of a rug or runner and thus sustain a serious injury.

It’s important to have a rubber backing or underlay, especially on tiles, to prevent awful slipping accidents or tripping on a side or end of thr rug. Also there are some quite attractive rugs with a non slip backing already in place.
