Diversity, sustainability and innovation are just some of the big subjects to be addressed at the Sydney Build 2022 Expo, which runs from June 1st to 2nd at the ICC in Sydney. With 400 speakers across government, architecture, contractors, associations and more, this is an important event for those that want to stay up to date on an ever-changing industry.
The organisers expect thousands of attendees, with eight conference stages booked, more than 500 exhibitors showcasing their expertise and products, and 400 speakers ready to share their knowledge.
Among them will be Ali Del Piero,
NSW Maintenance Superintendent
National Plant Group for John Holland, one of Australia’s leading engineering contractors. Del Piero will be part of a panel on: Hear from the Leaders Driving Equality and Change – Women in Construction.

She will outline John Holland’s strategy to become an industry leader and employer of choice for gender equality in a traditionally male-dominated industry.
“We will start with the short-term, with five key goals we have set out to achieve by the end 2022,” she says, prior to the event.

- Upskill leaders on the importance of leadership in diversity and inclusion, across the employee lifecycle.
- Focus on increasing the pipeline of women coming into the business with an introduction to the 40/40/20 framework and focus on removing bias in recruitment, shortlists, increased attraction strategies and high school, trade school and university engagement.
- Review processes to remove bias in our talent programs and succession planning.
- Assess why people are leaving the business and focus on retention.
- Track progress against participation.
The longer-term strategic plan, from 2023-2025, consists of five additional key goals:

George Sfinas from Standards Australia is due to speak on The Future of Technology in Construction where he will take attendees through what he thinks will be the significant ways technology will influence the industry.
Prior to the event he nominated two tech-rich processes as game changers.
“Building Information Modelling [a complex procedure that includes interaction with information from different construction stages along with cooperation and general management of a project] and digital engineering,” he says.
“I also think prefabricated construction is an innovation that will change traditional building.”
