Westchester House and Home

Love this article along with its ideas! Love the idea of an open shower, especially in a smaller bathroom because it doesn't take up as much space and there is less blockage. Adding mirrors and murals are great ways to make a space seem bigger as well.

I can't wait to post before and after pics of our small bathroom. My husband and I bought this bank owned Ranch Style House four years ago, after our house burned down. Actually it was my Father-in-Laws house. We had just moved from Texas to Maine after I was run over by a Ford Explorer and needed months to recover and heal. My husband had just completed his P.hD. and he had been away from Maine for over ten years, we took it as Guidance and had movers pack our huge truck and I became a "Transplanted Mainer!" We had already started to search for a new home. So when, yet another horrible Life Changing Event occurred, we just added our renters insurance to "Home Fund!" We lost everything. Family heirlooms, thousands of dollars in Fiesta, etc... However, we still only looked at Bank Owned properties, we were very picky and stuck to our "List!" We saw some numbers, but eventually we were Guided to the perfect house for us. The only reason it was bank owned was the original owner an elderly lady had passed and it went to the bank. All the "paperwork" was in the finished basement. The 1500 sq. feet house just needed paint, a little updating, and the hardwoods refinished. The garage was rather small and we could not fit our VW SUV or even our VW EOS in there comfortably, so we enclosed it making it my husband's art studio and plant room. With just the two of us the small bathroom with the most awkward floor plan God allowed man to create was "OK." However, we had an aunt whose husband passed away and was all alone in AZ. Somehow, word got out that we had an extra room, nobody knowing we were adopting! So, now this funky pink tub and sink bathroom needs to be re-vamped. The floor plan allowed us to remove a small piece of our Master bedroom wall and add a master bath and additional space for a nursery, library, or office. Both of us have spent a great deal of time in Europe, we have many European friends, and my husband's degree's are in German, Linguistics, and ESL. So, the Open Shower concept is actually what we did in our master bath and now, I'm thinking it might work for the main bathroom as well? Whatever route we choose we can't go too wrong. We purchased the home for 31K and just had it appraised at 98,9K; that's average for our neighborhood. Like I said we were Guided to this house! Thank you all for all the Excellent ideas! I'll post pics soon!
Much Peace ~
