Stickybeak of the Week: A Boy's Winning Reading Nook
A team of designers and retailers came together to create a reading nook, perfect for a little boy to kick back in with his favourite books
All parents will agree on the importance of encouraging our kids to read. We can pass on our favourite books, watch as their imaginations conjure up their own moving images and, for a while, they are lost in another world.
To make reading even more appealing to one lucky winner, in June 2015 Jacinda Malloy of Hide and Sleep teamed up with Penelope Hill of Into the Fold, along with a band of retailers, to create a cool and cosy reading nook as the prize in a collaborative giveaway. The Instagram competition attracted a lot of eager parents and children, but the winners were Kirsty and James Poole, who wanted to give their son Rex a special reading spot in his bedroom.

Malloy’s task was to decorate the room with the reading nook as the centrepiece. The team was supplied with all the products by retailers also passionate about the need-to-read cause, and Hill included her own favourite things that a reading nook couldn’t be without. This included the floor cushion, which Kirsty says they often take outside for Rex to sit on.

From a collection of local retailers’ products Malloy chose prints, decals, cushions and other decorative items that fit in with Rex’s current furniture. “I loved the Australian businesses that were involved. They were all people I had admired on Instagram and I knew they had great quality products that were well designed yet cool and stylish,” she says.
The room was already quite eclectic, which Malloy says worked perfectly for her as she was able to build on this. It also had great natural light with large windows part of the foundations of the home. It took her a day to decorate the room.
For Kirsty, her favourite features include the hanging chair, which she says is such a fun and peaceful place for Rex to sit. She also like the floor storage and the high shelf storage.

Malloy feels very proud to have been a part of this project, as she loves the idea of a reading nook and encouraging kids to read.

The aim was to create a space completely devoid of electronic devices, full of colour, texture and comfort. The entrants had to post a photo of the room they wanted made-over and Rex’s was the winner. “He had the space to fit a hanging chair, and we also noticed he had lots of books and loved reading already, so we were confident he would use the space,” says Malloy.
