FPA were approached to complete the modernisation of a large terrace townhouse in Pimlico that the clients had partially refurbished and extended using traditional idioms. The traditional Georgian cellular layout of the property has inspired the blueprint of the refurbishment. The extensive use of a streamlined contemporary vocabulary is chosen over a faux vernacular. FPA have approached the design as a series of self-contained spaces, each with bespoke features functional to the specific use of each room. They are conceived as stand-alone pieces that use a contemporary reinterpretation of the orthodox architectural lexicon and that work with the building, rather than against it. Contemporary Powder & Master Bathroom Remodel in Manhattan Beach, CA

Custom Design & Construction

This design / build project in Manhattan Beach, CA. included both a Powder Room and a Master Bathroom. The homeowners are recent empty nesters looking to upgrade the spaces for themselves. The Powder Room now features a white Rocface Eurostone countertop and grass cloth wall covering accented by wainscoting. The floor is porcelain tile and the faucet is Brizo. The cabinetry was custom made for this project to ensure that the space felt natural and refined. Even the ceiling of this relatively small space features beautiful molding detail. The Master Bathroom keeps a similar foot print to its predecessor but with updated style and materials. The shower now features a pebble floor and the bathtub has tile surround. The floating vanity makes the space feel larger without sacrificing storage space. The frosted glass on the water closet allow for privacy without darkening the space. The homeowners favorite feature of the space may be the shade over the bathtub which they are able to raise or lower via remote control.

Making Spaces

Kids bathrooms and curves. Toddlers, wet tiles and corners don't mix, so I found ways to add as many soft curves as I could in this kiddies bathroom. The round ended bath was tiled in with fun kit-kat tiles, which echoes the rounded edges of the double vanity unit. Those large format, terrazzo effect porcelain tiles disguise a multitude of sins too?a very family friendly space which just makes you smile when you walk on in. A lot of clients ask for wall mounted taps for family bathrooms, well let’s face it, they look real nice. But I don’t think they’re particularly family friendly. The levers are higher and harder for small hands to reach and water from dripping fingers can splosh down the wall and onto the top of the vanity, making a right ole mess. Some of you might disagree, but this is what i’ve experienced and I don't rate. So for this bathroom, I went with a pretty bombproof all in one, moulded double sink with no nooks and crannies for water and grime to find their way to. The double drawers house all of the bits and bobs needed by the sink and by keeping the floor space clear, there’s plenty of room for bath time toys baskets. The brief: can you design a bathroom suitable for two boys (1 and 4)? So I did. It was fun!
