A magnificent cobblestone driveway horseshoes around to a modern French Chateau estate. These homeowners were looking for a comprehensive landscape plan for their newly completed custom home. They wanted an extensive driveway, a planting plan that would provide privacy in some key areas while accentuating the style of the home, as well as a pool, fire feature, hot tub, new stone entrances, and a play center on artificial turf. We provided a design that brought together all these items with a very specific colour palette which we repeated throughout different elements.

Proving the good life doesn't have to be all about muddy allotments and wonky parsnips. Built towards the back of a large North-facing garden to maximise sun, it's comprised of a cottage style glass house, hardwood raised beds and cut-flower beds. Small design features such as old whisky barrels working as a water-butt, antique rhubarb forcers and an handmade oak bench help to create a perfect spot to enjoy a cup of tea whilst sowing seeds or taking a break from digging up homegrown potatoes.

A Mercer Island couple wanted to transform their yard from mushy lawn into a more usable, beach-like space. We added new concrete pads to connect the stairs to the waterfront complete with salvaged, cedar logs around a deconstructed wood-burning firepit, invigorating the space and creating a place to relax and entertain right on the water. Closer to the house, an ipe deck built around a new Paloform gas firepit created a new outdoor room for enjoying endless summer evenings. LED landscape lighting completes the improvements. My clients wanted a backyard retreat where they could make the most of their sloping pie shaped lot. We upgraded the gardens under the tree canopy with new focal points and seasonal interest, despite the shade. A new deck with pergola and custom privacy screen to give them a cozy space within a large yard. A pea gravel courtyard, one of the sunniest spots in the backyard created a nook in a previously unused part of the yard which provides a beautiful view of all their gardens.

How to Create a Garden for Your Home

Depending on which style you’re going for, be sure to know what makes a garden and if it’s appropriate for your climate. You may want to consider adding a deck or other landscaping features, but the plants you choose will mostly dictate your style and what kind of ongoing maintenance is required. Don’t worry if your backyard isn’t very spacious - there are many plants that can thrive even in a small space and allow you to turn your space into a little paradise of your own, regardless of size.

Decide which plants to use

The greenery you choose is critical to your look. For example, if you’re trying to create a tropical garden palm trees and bamboo are your go-to options. Other popular options are golden cane palm trees and fern for ground cover. From there you can add some colour with bright flowers like frangipani, hibiscus or bromeliads. All these are actually quite hardy plants, so once established, your tropical garden is actually quite easy to maintain. Use this structure and apply it to your style. Research which plants you need to set your base for a garden and go from there.

Add some decor

If the plants don’t quite do it for you yet, or if you want to add some extra wow-factor, consider adding some extra features. Even if you can’t accommodate a swimming pool, hot tub or pond, you could look at smaller water features. Simple rocks can also have a great effect, while statues and gnomes will add some extra character. Don’t forget to add some furniture so you have a nice place to sit and enjoy your garden!
