This lush entrance garden in Cow Hollow got a less thirsty, less formal, family friendly facelift without losing the connection to the traditional Shingle Style home and somewhat formal neighborhood. We reset the original brick pathways and added a nod to formality with the jasmine covered Belgium Vine just inside the front gate. Out went the balled boxwoods lining the path! In came the native meadow grasses and wildflowers!

Plant design and installation and photography by Chris Kolb of Ark Gardens. Chris designed an edible foundation border for his clients in Sandwich, MA. It includes Witherod Viburnum, Low bush blueberry, Wintergreen, and Highbush Blueberry. All these native shrubs produce edible berries. Wintergreen is also used as a tea. It is never a challenge to plant under oak canopy when the appropriate plants are selected for the job.

Prioritising quality over quantity, the crafted extension adds just 25sqm of meticulously considered space to our clients’ home, honouring Dieter Rams’ enduring philosophy of “less, but better”. We reprogrammed the original floorplan to marry each room with its best functional match – allowing an enhanced flow of the home, while liberating budget for the extension’s shared spaces. Though modestly proportioned, the new communal areas are smoothly functional, rich in materiality, and tailored to our clients’ passions. Shielding the house’s rear from harsh western sun, a covered deck creates a protected threshold space to encourage outdoor play and interaction with the garden. This charming home is big on the little things; creating considered spaces that have a positive effect on daily life.

All these are actually quite hardy plants, so once established, your tropical garden is actually quite easy to maintain. Use this structure and apply it to your style. Add some decor

If the plants don’t quite do it for you yet, or if you want to add some extra wow-factor, consider adding some extra features.
