The addition of the pergola and deck (where once there was a cramped ugly tiled porch) add to the appeal. A combination of drought tolerant perennials flourish here including Salvia leucantha, clipped Browalia and Gaillardias. The metal obelisks support floxgloves and delphiniums in spring.

Three generations of one family live in a semi-detached house on an urban hillcrest that drops off sharply in their backyard. They wanted an enclosed, courtyard-like rear garden that would enable them to use as much of the slope as possible and provide some privacy on a tightly constrained site. Wood structures occupy significantly more area than the planting beds on this small, sloping lot. These structures perform multiple storage functions and create distinct areas – the dining area, the bridge to the shed, the stepped-down ‘secret garden’ at the rear with a Venus Dogwood tree and bench seating, and several planted areas. Vibrantly painted slats accent the natural-finish boards in the cedar fence, ensuring that there is colour in the garden year round. Between the side walkway and the rear entry a half-storey below, a balustrade with angled slats organizes the accent colours into a spectrum. From the interior of the house, the chromatic shift in the slats and the spaces between them create visual effects that change with the viewing point.

A SMALL GARDEN PACKED WITH CHARACTER

Here’s another project recently finished by our landscaping team. Although this is a fairly small back garden we have created a visually exciting space with numerous areas of interest. A modest stone patio provides a good sized area for seating or dining. We used a variety of natural stone slabs in various sizes and colours in order to add texture and really brighten the space. Not only does stone look great in gardens, but this natural material is also extremely durable and long lasting. Flower beds have been used to edge the garden and are filled with a Ox-eye daisies, Yarrows and small shrubs to create a colourful surround. Potted plants are lined along the patio and add some greenery to the slatted fence. An asymetric deck leads your eye across the garden with a small pond nestles neatly below. Surrounded by natural stone and beautiful foliage this gives the garden a rustic look. The grey eco deck contrasts with natural materials helping to add a real contemporary edge. Finally the garden is finished with steps leading down to the circular lawn. This garden may be small but it’s definitely packed with plenty of character.

Our client had purchased a new build house that came with a patio and a lawn. They wanted to create a contemporary garden that would provide plenty of space for sitting and entertaining friends, whilst allowing their young child some space to play. A raised deck with overhead beams sits in one corner of the garden. Comfortable seating provides a space to enjoy the morning sun. A child-friendly water feature has been installed at the front end of the deck, where it can be enjoyed from the house, and a small swing has been attached to the overhead beams. Chunky rendered raised beds have been used to surround the extended patio, and part of the decked area. These can double as seating, if necessary. The planting palette is restricted, limited to plants that are mainly evergreen and easy to look after, with silver and purple foliage to contrast with the muted tones of the decking and raised beds.

Once the quotation was agreed this project start to finish took 5 days to remove the old decking, install the new decking and install the custom Accoya ® balustrade. We used recycled plastic posts too, this deck won’t be going anywhere for a long time. The Millboard decking also has a 25-year warranty because it’s installed by an approved installer. In this project we aimed to create a stylish garden which was both family friendly and low maintenance. Eco decking was used to create a large contemporary decking area. This composite product is slip resistant and is created using 95% recycled materials so is very eco friendly . This product is extremely low maintenance and long lasting. Rendered flower beds were built and complement the sleek and simple lines of the garden. A simplistic planting scheme has been utilised to add colour. A high quality artificial lawn was laid. This product is a great alternative for those looking for a lawn which will look lush all year round and will with stand children and animals playing on it. The slatted fence runs around the perimeter and adds warmth and texture to the space. Overall this garden is simple yet very slick.
