We designed the room to accommodate for a large 3 sided, low back modern-lined leather sectional. This was the perfect comfortable seating to accomplish full view of the full wall screened projector theater area as well as seating for game nights and any other casual family relaxing. The home cinema in this new build arts & crafts style property combines traditional design references with contemporary detailing. Built as a reference level Dolby Atmos cinema the installation incorporates Artcoustic Loudspeakers for 7.2.4 surround sound. There are two levels of luxurious cinema seating. A Denon AVR, OPPO Blu-ray player, 120” Screen Excellence screen and a 4k Sony projector form part of the installation. Savant is used to control the projector and audio via one remote and easy to use app. Storage of AV equipment, DVDs and a drinks chiller was achieved through the installation of bespoke joinery, also by Circle Automation. Exceptional acoustic quality within the room was created by the installation of fabric panelling on the walls. Lighting is also an integral part of this installation. Added depth is achieved through the use of a coiffured ceiling with LED lighting. The client’s artwork and sparkly wallpaper are also highlighted through washing light onto the walls through the positioning of in-ceiling spot lights.

To make the room more functional and aesthetically pleasing, the utilities were kept separate in their own room. To maximize the area and keep the cabinet from taking up unnecessary space, the media cabinetry was inset into the common wall of the mechanical room. The left and right-hand closets were custom-designed to fit the homeowners’ decorations, supplies and miscellaneous storage needs. The walls and ceiling were painted Universal Khaki and textured to match the rest of the house. The trim and doors were painted in enamel white, also to match the rest of the home. Special features include custom-designed Kitchen Craft cabinets painted in a Cappuccino finish, a Virginia Ledgestone accent wall, Palliser Flicks power recliners, a GE wall oven, and a Zephyr wine cooler. The home theater room also features A/V, surround sound, HVAC, ambient lighting, wall sconces, row seating, in-wall speakers, and heated floors for optional floor seating.

Technology has never been better, and with the likes of a 3D TV, projector or super-sized TV, surround sound, comfy sofa and recliner chairs, you can easily bring Hollywood into your home. True film fanatics might even install a popcorn machine or fairy floss maker! Add a gaming console that can hook up to the big screen and you have yourself a fully functional media room. If you’re really serious about creating your own home theatre, spend some time researching the right home theatre systems for your needs, as well as speakers, lighting and lounge furniture. Do I need a designated room for a home cinema?

If you have space to spare, a separate cinema room can be quite the luxury, but it’s definitely not necessary to enjoy all the benefits of home theatre experience. Most people integrate their home cinema into their living room. So you don’t compromise on style, consider having your TV screen mounted to the wall, or install a projector that can be stowed away when not in use. If in your living room, try to disguise your speakers and any cables. Ceiling-integrated speakers are a great option. Otherwise, in a standalone theatre room, consider making your speakers a feature.

What should I look for in home theatre seating?

Comfort should be front of mind when looking for home theatre seating, so look for options that allow you to sink in, recline and adjust your headrest. For an authentic cinema-going experience, stadium seating is a must. Platforms and stairs, complete with LED step lighting, can mimic tiers. Leather recliner chairs are a top-end choice, or you could opt for several modular sofas and ottomans instead. To cater for those who like to watch, eat and drink at the same time, look for seating that has cup holders, or install a bar area with turnable stools.

What equipment should I add to my media room?

A projector and projector screen will lead to a more dramatic movie experience, but the picture can be slightly blurry if the equipment quality is bad. A high-definition plasma or LCD TV might not be quite as large scale, but will deliver a more crisp, clear image. You can, however, find oversized wall-mounted TVs that match the size of a projector screen – but these do cost a pretty penny.
