The design process was a collaboration with the home owner, designer and contractor.

A large social kitchen that leads onto a multi-use pantry and laundry room offers endless storage and also keeps the refrigerator out of the main kitchen area. The laundry is behind a sliding door dressed with planters for herbs. Open shelves in the kitchen create interest and easy access to glasses, tableware and spices and also accentuate the high ceilings.

This large and bright kitchen was rethought from a dark cabinet, dark counter top and closed in feel. First the large separating wall from the kitchen into the back hallway overlooking the pool was reduced in height to allow light to spill into the room all day long. Navy Cabinets were repalinted white and the island was updated to a light grey. Absolute black counter tops were left on the perimeter cabinets but the center island and sink area were resurfaced in Cambria Ella. A apron front sign with Newport Brass bridge faucet was installed to accent the area. New pendant lights over the island and retro barstools complete the look. New undercabinet lighting, lighted cabinets and new recessed lighting finished out the kitchen in a new clean bright and welcoming room. Perfect for the grandkids to be in.

This beautiful home in San Elijo Hills had a good floor plan but was dated and a bit blah. Adding some rustic, industrial and still sophisticated finishes to the space created a new home for my client that reflected her personality and love for all things vintage. The kitchen had a built in pantry that took up to much space and wasn't efficient. The island was poorly shaped and lacked storage. We took out the built-in pantry and added a 36" pantry cabinet with full roll outs. The island has 3 times as much storage, is more efficient and shaped appropriately for the space. An additional seating nook was also created for casual dining. A bonus wine nook was able to be designed when we found an opening in the wall behind the pantry!

This is framed kitchen is hand painted in two Little Greene colours - Slaked Lime Green Deep and French Grey Dark – both of which are an ideal match for the resilient and durable Lagoon Quartz worktop and but also a lovely contrast to the Planked Oak at the curved end of the island. Specially commissioned, to form a feature of the room, is the bespoke large dresser with its floating oak shelves, perfect for display and the glazed cupboards which are handy for accessibility as well as looking classic and timeless. Keeping it contemporary the owners chose an elegant Antiqued Mirror splashback with gold backing which helps to elevate this classic Shaker out-of-the-ordinary and adds a real touch of pzzazz! An essential for family living, and something we’re regularly asked to build, is the chalk board cupboard which has a convenient push-to-open mechanism and shelves inside. The cool limestone flooring is a great choice and keeps it practical - timely considering the owners welcomed their first child during the build!

In a wonderful Tudor 30’s home there was a tiny kitchen, a tiny laundry and a tiny breakfast nook enclosed by walls. We removed all the walls and reframed the load bearing beams to convert these tiny little spaces into one large kitchen with many windows for a bright feeling, another wall was removed to connect the kitchen space to the dining and living room creating a great semi-open space. Classical shaker cabinets with a pewter accent island combined with the warmth of the bamboo flooring and the wooded floating shelves made this kitchen feel like it was always there. Modern gold pulls, plumbing fixtures and pendant light combined with the Viking range give this kitchen a high end feeling.

1. What Makes a Good Kitchen Design, and Why is it Important?

For starters, you want to find a balance between aesthetics and function. You may have heard of the ‘kitchen work triangle’, which refers to the space between your fridge, sink and stove. You want everything within easy reach when you’re working in the kitchen and look beautiful at the same time. It’s a good idea to take note of both when browsing our photo gallery.

2. Consider Your Space to Determine Your Kitchen Layout

Firstly, consider the space you have, and the limitations that come with it. Do you have a small kitchen and need to maximise your workspace and storage? Can you allow yourself some more space and a big island with seating? Are you designing your kitchen from scratch or renovating an existing design? Which appliances do you already own and what are their measurements? Are there windows you need to take into consideration when planning cabinets? How do kitchen, living and dining areas connect? Depending on your space and needs, you want to use a shape that suits you. U, G, or L-shaped kitchen, with or without island or peninsula? Know your dimensions, plan cabinetry carefully and consider the placement of your appliances. You don’t want to end up with a finished design, only for your significant other to question where the fridge is supposed to go. Consider from the start where your fridge, oven, microwave and sink goes to save yourself from starting again from scratch - remember the kitchen work triangle! You also want to plan the layout of your cabinets. Maybe you’re planning for a pantry and can do with less storage space in your kitchen, so that your design can be one without upper or lower cabinets for a different look. A corner cabinet can be a smart storage solution if you want to keep the look clean and simple.

3. Decide on a Kitchen Style, But Don’t Forget Practicality

You want the style of your kitchen to reflect your personality and taste. Consider what your cooking style is for a start - Italy is known for its cuisine, so italian kitchen designs are generally popular. Also consider ergonomics - depending on how much time you spend in your kitchen, the height of your counters can make a big difference to your overall health. You also want to consider colour and finishes of cabinets, countertops and splashbacks. Which colour do you want your cupboards to be? Simple, timeless white or rather making a statement in black?
