A rhythm is felt from the ceiling beams to the glass upper cabinets, design themes that flow to the dining and great room to maintain a light and airy atmosphere. The cadence continues between zones for entertaining and cooking. The beverage area is connected but does not overpower the function of the kitchen. Undercounter refrigeration, drinkware, glass front cabinetry and the television unite as a hub for hosting. A small sink by the cooktop serves both areas for prep and beverage. Overhead, the rangehood is simple in form with an intention to resemble a European plaster hood. The tile backsplash has a handmade feel for a transitional appearance with old-world comfort.

When it came to the inspiration for the Falls Church project, a good deal of it came from our client’s love for Heath Ceramics. Located out in Sausalito, California, this company is best-known for their handcrafted ceramic tableware and architectural tile in distinctive glazes. Further down (if you scroll) there is a photo of the growing client’s collection! Taking cue from these pieces (the color, style and story); we also took note of the Heath store itself, and how it tied in (in regards to the finishes/style) perfectly with our vision for the home.

JRP Design & Remodel

This modern farmhouse chic kitchen remodel features clean lines of alabaster cabinets and white gloss ceramic square tiles layered with natural wood tones. Removing the wall between the kitchen and family room allowed for a generous new island with a quartz countertop and farmhouse sink and plenty of below-counter storage space while creating a large open living space. Adding faux ceiling beams helps to transition the space into the modern farmhouse style. The raised upper cabinets provide extended storage space and the lighted top cabinets add beautiful display or functional space. Black quartz flanks the stove and provides plenty of countertop space for cooking tools and kitchen necessities. The dark bronzed and brass detailed hood and matching island lighting complement the kitchen’s neutral colors. The dining nook features a linear aged-iron lighting fixture and under-seating drawers. 1. What Makes a Good Kitchen Design, and Why is it Important?

For starters, you want to find a balance between aesthetics and function. You may have heard of the ‘kitchen work triangle’, which refers to the space between your fridge, sink and stove. You want everything within easy reach when you’re working in the kitchen and look beautiful at the same time. It’s a good idea to take note of both when browsing our photo gallery.

2. Consider Your Space to Determine Your Kitchen Layout

Firstly, consider the space you have, and the limitations that come with it. Do you have a small kitchen and need to maximise your workspace and storage? Can you allow yourself some more space and a big island with seating? Are you designing your kitchen from scratch or renovating an existing design? Which appliances do you already own and what are their measurements? Are there windows you need to take into consideration when planning cabinets? How do kitchen, living and dining areas connect? Depending on your space and needs, you want to use a shape that suits you. U, G, or L-shaped kitchen, with or without island or peninsula? Know your dimensions, plan cabinetry carefully and consider the placement of your appliances. You don’t want to end up with a finished design, only for your significant other to question where the fridge is supposed to go.
