This property and house underwent a complete renovation. Existing drainage and grading problems were fixed, then modular outdoor spaces such as the pool area, a rich lush lawn, an entertaining area for large gatherings under an allee of fragrant linden trees, and a pool house/guest apartment were installed. In phase one, a large planting of evergreen privacy perimeter plants and foundation plants were installed. Landscape lighting extends the use of the entire property into beautiful summer nights lounging by the pool. The two entry areas were re-designed and renovated to accommodate guest parking when the family is hosting a large gathering.

The clients courtyard was designed to work around the majestic live oak tree and its massive canopy. The fence is edged with Alphonse Karr Bamboo, and the elliptical bed at the foot of the tree showcase a mass planting of wood ferns. The courtyard houses an elongated ipe deck with floating wood and metal stairs. The ipe skirting offers an untraditional, but dynamic and distinct look.

This new construction home was in need of a complete landscape design and installation. All details were considered to create intimate spaces as well as a sweeping backyard landscape to compliment the views from the home. The home sits on two lots which allowed it to be built at the desired size. The front yard includes a modern entry courtyard featuring bluestone, decorative gravel and granite sculpture - as well as decorative concrete planters. The backyard has several levels. The upper level is an expanse of lawn with hedging. The middle tier planting softens the poured concrete wall. A steep slope descends to the street below. The homeowners wanted to create access from parking below to the home above, so a series of pavers and granite risers was designed to create a comfortable pathway that also forms the focal point of the backyard. Ecoturf lawn was installed on the slope to minimize the need for water and mowing. Concrete edging deliniates the lawn from the beds where a mixture of evergreen and deciduous plants create year-round interest. All these are actually quite hardy plants, so once established, your tropical garden is actually quite easy to maintain. Use this structure and apply it to your style. Research which plants you need to set your base for a modern garden and go from there.

Add some decor

If the plants don’t quite do it for you yet, or if you want to add some extra wow-factor, consider adding some extra features. Even if you can’t accommodate a swimming pool, hot tub or pond, you could look at smaller water features. Simple rocks can also have a great effect, while statues and gnomes will add some extra character. Don’t forget to add some furniture so you have a nice place to sit and enjoy your garden!
