The patio, which runs the full length of the yard, is durable acid etched concrete which has the look of limestone but without natural stone’s vulnerability for staining. A comfortable lounge area towards the middle of the yard echoes the modern theme with a striking ensemble of minimal design black and white elements.

This new estate home has rolling terrain that drops off sharply towards the back and right side. So, to create a multi-featured backyard, Betz designed a series of terraces on five descending levels starting at the main floor covered loggia and ending at the basement walkout.

The focal point of the yard is the elevated black granite feature wall which supports an elegant sheer descent waterfall and twin fire bowls. Like the pool, it’s capped with smooth-faced limestone coping which helps to extend the modern look. The fire bowls plus fireplace surround guests with flickering flames on three sides.

This Forest Hill home had a 1980s style concrete pool which didn’t suit the owner’s modern aesthetic. They had Betz do a total backyard makeover including a modern 16’ x 24.5’ rectangular pool with spa, an elevated stone wall with fire bowls and sheer descent waterfall plus a custom pergola fully equipped for entertaining.

There was nothing but grass behind the home, so beginning at the main floor covered loggia, Betz created a series of terraces on five descending levels ending at the basement walkout. This allowed separate levels for a sitting area and spa, pool deck with chaise lounges plus a cabana level for entertaining and dining.

To integrate the pool area with the back of the home the level of the pool, deck and cabana are higher than the surrounding terrain. Thus, Betz did a landscape design to reconcile the drop with a series of steps plus an armour stone retaining wall to maintain the views from the basement windows.

One of the design challenges for this backyard was Toronto’s 50% lot coverage limit. It would have been nice to have had a little more deck beyond the coping at the deep end to facilitate diving. Thankfully, the addition of a row of stepping stones in its place satisfied that need.
