The home office seemslessly merges with the living room as the custom leather-top desk-for-two hugs the curve of the back of the sofa, with its wave form and the wavy paneled wall giving homage to the waves crashing on the shoreline thirty stories below. The structural column becomes a focal point when clad in custom painted zebra glass panels with a linear light source embedded within. Photo shoot by professional photographer Ken Hayden

James had a wall on his home exterior that he decided to install GenStone's Multi Color Brick over. The Multi Color Brick goes well with the rest of the brick siding on his home exterior, and it provides a beautiful background for his garden.

For this remodel in Portola Valley, California we were hired to rejuvenate a circa 1980 modernist house clad in deteriorating vertical wood siding. The house included a greenhouse style sunroom which got so unbearably hot as to be unusable. We opened up the floor plan and completely demolished the sunroom, replacing it with a new dining room open to the remodeled living room and kitchen. We added a new office and deck above the new dining room and replaced all of the exterior windows, mostly with oversized sliding aluminum doors by Fleetwood to open the house up to the wooded hillside setting. Stainless steel railings protect the inhabitants where the sliding doors open more than 50 feet above the ground below. We replaced the wood siding with stucco in varying tones of gray, white and black, creating new exterior lines, massing and proportions. We also created a new master suite upstairs and remodeled the existing powder room.

I was hired by the parents of a soon-to-be teenage girl turning 13 years-old. They wanted to remodel her bedroom from a young girls room to a teenage room. This project was a joy and a dream to work on! I got the opportunity to channel my inner child. I wanted to design a space that she would love to sleep in, entertain, hangout, do homework, and lounge in.
The first step was to interview her so that she would feel like she was a part of the process and the decision making. I asked her what was her favorite color, what was her favorite print, her favorite hobbies, if there was anything in her room she wanted to keep, and her style.
The second step was to go shopping with her and once that process started she was thrilled. One of the challenges for me was making sure I was able to give her everything she wanted. The other challenge was incorporating her favorite pattern-- zebra print. I decided to bring it into the room in small accent pieces where it was previously the dominant pattern throughout her room. The color palette went from light pink to her favorite color teal with pops of fuchsia. I wanted to make the ceiling a part of the design so I painted it a deep teal and added a beautiful teal glass and crystal chandelier to highlight it. Her room became a private oasis away from her parents where she could escape to. In the end we gave her everything she wanted.

Dutton Architects did an extensive renovation of a post and beam mid-century modern house in the canyons of Beverly Hills. The house was brought down to the studs, with new interior and exterior finishes, windows and doors, lighting, etc. A secure exterior door allows the visitor to enter into a garden before arriving at a glass wall and door that leads inside, allowing the house to feel as if the front garden is part of the interior space. Similarly, large glass walls opening to a new rear gardena and pool emphasizes the indoor-outdoor qualities of this house. photos by Undine Prohl

Designed for a family who is relocating back to California, this contemporary residence sits atop a severely steep site in the community of Las Ventanas. Working with the topography led to some creative design solutions, structurally and aesthetically, to accommodate all of the family’s programatic needs. The 4127 s.f. home fits into the relatively small building footprint while an infinity edge pool cantilevers 22′ above grade. With spectacular views of the Arroyo Grande foothills and farms, this main pool deck becomes a major feature of the home. All living spaces, including the great room and kitchen open up to this deck, ideal for relaxation and entertainment. Given that the owners have five golden retrievers, this outdoor space also serves as an area for the dogs. The design includes multiple water features and even a dog pond.
To further emphasize the views, a third story mitered glass reading room gives one the impression of sitting above the treetops. The use of warm IPE hardwood siding and stone cladding blend the structure into the surrounding landscape while still offering a clean and contemporary aesthetic.

In the hills of San Anselmo in Marin County, this 5,000 square foot existing multi-story home was enlarged to 6,000 square feet with a new dance studio addition with new master bedroom suite and sitting room for evening entertainment and morning coffee. Sited on a steep hillside one acre lot, the back yard was unusable. New concrete retaining walls and planters were designed to create outdoor play and lounging areas with stairs that cascade down the hill forming a wrap-around walkway. The goal was to make the new addition integrate the disparate design elements of the house and calm it down visually. The scope was not to change everything, just the rear façade and some of the side facades.
The new addition is a long rectangular space inserted into the rear of the building with new up-swooping roof that ties everything together. Clad in red cedar, the exterior reflects the relaxed nature of the one acre wooded hillside site. Fleetwood windows and wood patterned tile complete the exterior color material palate.
The sitting room overlooks a new patio area off of the children’s playroom and features a butt glazed corner window providing views filtered through a grove of bay laurel trees. Inside is a television viewing area with wetbar off to the side that can be closed off with a concealed pocket door to the master bedroom. The bedroom was situated to take advantage of these views of the rear yard and the bed faces a stone tile wall with recessed skylight above. The master bath, a driving force for the project, is large enough to allow both of them to occupy and use at the same time.
The new dance studio and gym was inspired for their two daughters and has become a facility for the whole family. All glass, mirrors and space with cushioned wood sports flooring, views to the new level outdoor area and tree covered side yard make for a dramatic turnaround for a home with little play or usable outdoor space previously.

Project Description:
Located on Fire Island, a barrier island off of Long Island, NY, this bayfront house is the summer retreat for a family who lives and works in Manhattan.
The house is designed as two distinct volumes, to provide the parents and their adult children with separate quarters for living and entertaining. The volumes are clad in cedar and connected by a glass bridge, sheltering a courtyard and pool, which receive western exposure for maximum daylight.
The design of the house prioritizes views and access to the outdoors. The typical configuration of private spaces stacked on top of a lower public zone is flipped; in this residence, the communal upper level enjoys the best views and access to outdoor decks for entertaining. Kitchen, dining, and living space flows out to the bay beyond, ideal for watching summer sunsets. Large expanses of glass, in the form of continuous sliding doors break down the boundary between interior and exterior, and add to the airy, openess of the house.
The house embraces local island traditions, through both its construction process and its design. Cars are prohibited on the small island, so the house and its material were brought on barges to the site. The primary mode of transportation on the island is wagons and bikes. The design of the large curving entry ramp accommodates for this mode of transportation, allowing wagons to be wheeled right up to the front door. Plenty of parking for bikes is also provided. Natural ground cover of beach grasses and brush keep the site low maintenance and sensitive to local vegetation. The cedar siding ages to a silvery grey, and adapts this modern volume to the beachfront vernacular.

A mix of industrial and natural elements make up this very unique den. The color palette, textures, and forms all work together to create a luxurious yet inviting space. Custom pieces such as the metal tree artwork, glass leaf floor lamp, and detailed throw pillows, add character to this otherwise almost ordinary space. The windows are framed with heavy metal draperies layer behind silver sheers.
In the bathroom, the industrial theme continues with an abundance of silver. Silver-leafed wall covering layers over dark paint on the walls. A custom vanity and paired mirror add to the uniqueness of this space.

A cramped and dated kitchen was completely removed. New custom cabinets, built-in wine storage and shelves came from the same shop. Quartz waterfall counters were installed with all-new flooring, LED light fixtures, plumbing fixtures and appliances. A new sliding pocket door provides access from the dining room to the powder room as well as to the backyard. A new tankless toilet as well as new finishes on floor, walls and ceiling make a small powder room feel larger than it is in real life.
