The dark, blue-grey walls and stylish complementing furniture is almost paradoxically lit up by the huge bey window, creating a cozy living room atmosphere which, when mixed with the wall-mounted neon sign and other decorative pieces comes off as edgy, without loosing it's previous appeal.
RRA Architects
Whilst the site was a good size for the building, the working area was tight due to the very steep slope and limited access. Therefore, to minimise construction costs RRA designed the replacement dwelling to use the existing building footprint and foundations, and kept the ridge height the same as the existing house. The garage became part of the main house using a small link and a subterranean level with additional parking was excavated. This strategy resulting in no negative visual impact to the views of surrounding buildings whilst enabling a significant increase to the floor area.
Extensive glazing was used strategically to benefit from the stunning views over Cheltenham whilst also allowing the building to fully utilise the solar gain to heat the house. Balcony areas have been added to offer the inhabitants outdoor space, other than the garden, from which to enjoy the views.
Central to the building is the large kitchen area which links several areas of the house. This features a central void space to a large rooflight positioned to increase the natural light within the deepest part of the building.
In order to integrate the contemporary style into the natural surroundings a pallette of render, Cedar Cladding, Local Stone and Powder Coated Aluminium Windows was employed.
Externally the use of solar powered, low-level lighting, illuminates the access forecourt for safety, without causing excessive light pollution.

the deck
The deck is an outdoor room with a high awning roof built over. This dramatic roof gives one the feeling of being outside under the sky and yet still sheltered from the rain. The awning roof is freestanding to allow hot summer air to escape and to simplify construction. The architect designed the kitchen as a sculpture. It is also very practical and makes the most out of economical materials.

CLPM Limited
The kitchen is practical and welcoming and is perfect for a bust family. It also incorporates a spiral wine cellar.
CLPM project manager tip - spiral cellars can be installed in most ground floor locations. You do not need to have a basement. You generally don't need planning permission to install them and they can usually be installed in under a week without much disruption.

Award-winning project (Winner of Daily Telegraph and National Homebuilders Award 2008- Best Extension and remodeling). The dramatic 85m2 glass façade extension is completely integrated with the existing 220m2 Metropolitan style 1930’s building; it transforms the overall layout and brings into the house the views of the beautifully designed garden.

This early Edwardian 'Arts & Crafts' style house is located in the Western Escarpment Conservation Area near Ringwood.
The 86m2 extension lightly connects to the south of the existing non-designated heritage asset house by means of a glazed link.
The main hipped roof volume contains the kitchen, dining room and living room with nine metre wide biparting, bifolding doors to the west creating a strong connection with the 3 acre site.
A 'fabric first' approach to the extension and upgrades to insulation and heating / hot water system in the existing house have seen the EPC improve from 'F' to 'B'.

Roger Gransmore Architect
Knowle House is set on a beautiful sloped site in Cranham, between Stroud and Gloucester. A glass extension provides a new living and dining space attached to the Grade-II Listed property.
The extension has large contemporary glazed doors which slide back to connect the living space to the garden patio. A green roof finishes the flat roof and a projecting cantilevered canopy provides shading to control solar gain. Rainwater is captured firstly in the green roof, which then passes playfully down a ‘rain chain’ into the flower bed.
A narrow slot rooflight fills the extension with natural daylight, washing across the original Cotswold stone wall, now incorporated within the extension to provide a feature wall.
The ‘Horizon window’ is a key feature of the extension, framing views to Buckholt Wood. The window is carefully designed to ensure privacy while providing stunning uninterrupted views to the woodland on the horizon.
Mozolowski & Murray
Mozolowski & Murray designed both these extensions, The modern cube and the traditional orangery next door. Two similar spaces, two different approaches with very different end results.
