Designed in 1949 by Pietro Belluschi this Northwest style house sits adjacent to a stream in a 2-acre garden. The current owners asked us to design a new wing with a sitting room, master bedroom and bath and to renovate the kitchen. Details and materials from the original design were used throughout the addition. Special foundations were employed at the Master Bedroom to protect a mature Japanese maple. In the Master Bath a private garden court opens the shower and lavatory area to generous outside light.

The inspiration for this garden arose from the needs of the location (a shady, fairly moist courtyard surrounded on three sides by building and the drive) and nearby woods. We created a fern and moss garden sprinkled with woodland ephemerals and plants for textural intrigue. A wide brick walkway separates the rectangular space into a thin strip of bed to its right and a larger space to its left, in which a stone wall was built around to provide more intimacy walking along the entrance walkway. The wall was deliberately made to have aged and deteriorated, allowing plantings to take over and soften its hardness, much as if a stacked stone wall would be overran in an abandoned woodland. We placed found rocks, stumps, and fallen, decaying logs charactered with moss and native seedlings to accent the plantings as focal points and delicate touches. We configured the stumps almost as 'containers' in the garden, each planted with an assortment of different species. The soil, especially around the walkway, was shaped to have small undulations to mimic the imperfections of the forest floor. Photos taken by Laura Kicey.

Nestled into the quiet middle of a block in the historic center of the beautiful colonial town of San Miguel de Allende, this 4,500 square foot courtyard home is accessed through lush gardens with trickling fountains and a luminous lap-pool. The living, dining, kitchen, library and master suite on the ground floor open onto a series of plant filled patios that flood each space with light that changes throughout the day. Elliptical domes and hewn wooden beams sculpt the ceilings, reflecting soft colors onto curving walls. A long, narrow stairway wrapped with windows and skylights is a serene connection to the second floor ''Moroccan' inspired suite with domed fireplace and hand-sculpted tub, and "French Country" inspired suite with a sunny balcony and oval shower. A curving bridge flies through the high living room with sparkling glass railings and overlooks onto sensuously shaped built in sofas. At the third floor windows wrap every space with balconies, light and views, linking indoors to the distant mountains, the morning sun and the bubbling jacuzzi. At the rooftop terrace domes and chimneys join the cozy seating for intimate gatherings.

The entrance gate to the garden is made of Port Orford cedar. Layered cedar shingles compose the roof of the gate, and the ridge is capped with traditional Japanese ceramic tiles. The design motif of the gate doors was hand carved by Sakaguchi-san. In traditional Japanese construction, finish is never applied to the cedar, and the wood ages over time to a silver gray. In this photo, taken a few years after construction, one can see this process beginning to take place.

The delicate foliage of Japanese Maples goes through striking colour changes throughout the year, before falling from the branches in winter. Bare branches don't have to be an unsightly reality of deciduous trees in a well-planned garden; their structural form can provide a backdrop for other foliage.

As the garden was built on top of a filled-in swimming pool, raised beds and planters were incorporated to enable a variety of plants to be planted, such as bamboos, Japanese Maples, dome-shaped yew and pittosporum 'tom thumb' amongst others. A traditional Japanese water feature with a Natsume Bachi and bamboo spout were used.

Completed in 2002, this new home in San Francisco is conceived as a series of interlocking forms, stepping up the hill and out of the earth to become a transparent glass form bound by the planar structure. This linear language informs the details throughout, appearing in the plan, elevations and custom furniture design. The street level entry opens to a sculpture court where an open, steel and concrete stairway leads to a terrace and the formal front door. All three living levels enjoy panoramic views of the city from the front and the serenity of a Japanese inspired garden to the rear.

At the top of these stairs is a tiny Carex meadow leading to a garden room resembling an ancient ruin-
an idyll where lovers met in secret? The 'floor' inside the crumbling stone walls is an Italian mosaic tile floor with plants growing through the cracks.
The 'ceiling' is formed by the canopies of 4 statuesque olive trees.
A fountain, once the laundry trough on a French estate, cools the body and erases mundane thoughts with its gentle trickle.
Stone urns announce the entrance; at night they are gas-lit to set the mood for the ultimate romantic midnight picnic.
