The Plimsoll Building is a high-end residential building located in the heart of Kings Cross, London. This recently completed collection of apartments, duplexes and penthouses have breath-taking views over Gasholder Park, Regent’s Canal and the city of London beyond. The Plimsoll Building also houses King’s Cross Academy and the Frank Barnes School for Deaf Children.
The project is influenced by the rich heritage and history of Kings Cross, reflected in the refined interiors, meticulously crafted using a combination of the finest hand-picked materials by interior designers Johnson Naylor; and the design and layout of the mailboxes and their location was no exception.
The project features a minimalistic style combined with integrated sources of light to brighten the location and provide the luxury finish that the client was looking for.
Our mailboxes were to blend into the background of the lobby area with a clean finish, but when focussed upon, come alive with a visually interesting configuration of mailboxes. Unlike a classic bank of mailboxes with a rectangle or square overall shape, the Plimsoll Building Project has staggered the starting and ending points of the vertical columns of mailboxes.
The mailboxes are located in the reception lobby area of the building where residents walk through to access their apartments. Horizontal type ‘COM 2 – 180 Steel Door’ mailboxes have been recessed into the wall which ensured that there was enough space in the immediate area for residents to retrieve their mail whilst allowing other building users to pass in the corridor with ease. Using horizontal type mailboxes allows projects with a restricted height to fit a high number of mailboxes into their location area whilst receiving A4 mail, which was ideal for this project.
The mailboxes have been finished in a custom white colour sourced from a specialist paint supplier to meet the colour design of the rest of the immediate lobby area. The front door of each mailbox has been engraved with a bold jet-black colouring, numbered to match each individual apartment to ensure that residents can easily find their own mailbox. The engraving has been centralised with both the horizontal dimensions of the mailbox and the security lock, ensuring a coaxial design finish.

The Avant-garde project features multiple banks of mailboxes that include both vertical and horizontal mail types. The mailboxes used in the project were produced using our high-quality Stainless Steel material with a 316L grade finish.
The banks of mailboxes are divided between wall mounted and freestanding installation, providing a solution for a project where the available space is limited. The banks of freestanding mailboxes were mounted upon a support frame custom designed for the project to provide a secure and stable base for the banks.
All banks in the project are situated in a fishing surround created using American White Oak Veneer to enhance the look and feel of the location.
The Avant-garde project is based in the trendy urban London hotspot Shoreditch, and required the mailboxes to be of the very highest quality to enhance the mail reception area.

The design of the development is striking, with three large rooftop gardens slicing in to the body of the high-rise tower, with the upper levels being supported by a cantilever. The open air spaces offer a modern take on the traditional London rooftop gardens, providing residents with space to relax outside of their home.
The façade of the building features a combination of transparent and solid panels manufactured in terracotta and glass. The building has been manufactured with a triangular geometric shape to offer a visually-interesting design, pushing the boundaries of modern high-res city developments.
The project required 148 mailboxes to securely store the mail deliveries for the residents living in the high-end development. The mailboxes are located on the ground floor in the entrance walkways, with access to the mailboxes and building behind a secured external property door.
The mailboxes are configured into multiple products in a bank, maximising the quantity of mail that can be securely stored in a minimum amount of space. The banks of mailboxes are recessed in to the walls of the walkways, fixed through the back panel of each mailbox into the wall. Due to the size of the mailbox banks (first bank: 10 high x 11 wide, second bank: 10 high x 14 wide), the mailboxes were securely fixed through side faces of the product, as well as both the top and bottom faces in to the wall to achieve a maximum fix to the installation walls.
The mailbox model used in this development was ‘The Tile’ product that that features composite doors finished in a Stainless Steel – grade 316L with a vertical grain flow. This product has been used on other high-end projects such as Rathbone Place and Fulham High Street (features on these projects coming soon!)
The mailbox uses a non-standard lock with a Matt Nickel bespoke finish that secures the front door of the mailbox in style. Each mailbox features contrasting matt black engraved numbering on the face of the stainless steel door. The numbering corresponds to the apartment numbers of the residents in the development, allowing mail delivery personnel granted access to the area as well as the resident to easily identify the correct mailbox.
