The first thing you notice as you enter the Asheville Mountain House is the beautiful wall of glass at the rear of the family room. A vaulted ceiling, a stone fireplace, and exposed timber beams give the family room a cozy mountain lodge feel. The kitchen, dining area, and family room are all open to each other and enjoy the same views. A golf garage, laundry room, and pantry are conveniently located just off the kitchen. The master suite is located on the main level and enjoys a private covered porch. The master bath features a soaking tub, a walk in shower, and a walk in closet. The upper level includes two bedrooms that each have a walk in closet and a private bath. Each upper bedroom features a dormer overlooking the rear views. These dormers are sized so that a regular size mattress can be placed in them creating an over sized window seat/bed if the owner chooses. An open loft overlooking the family room connects the upper bedrooms. The lower level can be finished with a recreation room, a wet bar, a hall bath, and girls and boys bunkrooms. A workshop and lake storage is also a possibility on the lower level. Exterior materials are typically stone, board and batten, and shake. Craftsman brackets, columns, and details are used throughout. Spacious covered porches and an outdoor fireplace on the rear of the house helps complete the Asheville Mountain House Floor Plan.

Before Siemasko + Verbridge got their hands on this house, it was a convoluted maze of small rooms and skinny hallways. The renovation made sense of the layout, and took full advantage of the captivating ocean views. The result is a harmonious blend of contemporary style with classic and sophisticated elements. The “empty nest” home is transformed into a welcoming sanctuary for the extended family of kids and grandkids.

It's Christmas in July!
This homeowner was interested in adding an outdoor space that would be continuous with their
indoor living area. The large windows that separate the 2 spaces allows for their home to have a very open feel. They went with a contemporary craftsman style with clean straight lines in the columns and beams on the ceiling. The stone veneer fireplace, framed with full masonry block,
with reclaimed Hemlock mantle as the centerpiece attraction and the stained pine tongue and
groove vaulted ceiling gives the space a dramatic look. The columns have a stacked stone base
that complements the stone on the fireplace and kitchen fascia. The light travertine flooring is a
perfect balance for the dark stone on the column bases
and knee walls beside the fireplace as
well as the darker stained cedar beams and stones in the fireplace. The outdoor kitchen with
stainless steel tile backsplash is equipped with a gas grill
and a Big Green Egg as well as a fridge
and storage space. This space is 525 square feet and is the perfect spot for any gathering. The
patio is surrounded by stained concrete stepping stones with black star gravel. The original
second story windows were replaced with smaller windows in order to allow for a proper roof pitch.

Situated on a 100 acre site, this landscape for a private residence draws it's inspiration from the classic mountain lodges of the northeast. Rich sweeping drifts of native perennials, grasses and shrubs create a relaxed, elegant composition that ground the home and define a variety of spaces for family gathering, entertaining and quiet reflection. Large caliper trees were planted to compliment the surrounding mature trees, providing a sense of permanence and timelessness. An existing pond was augmented and expanded for swimming with a 'diving rock' hand selected and perched at one end. The south-facing terrace is defined by large slabs of stone and a grand outdoor fireplace that gives way to views of the neighboring ski trails.

Edgewater Design Group
As written in Northern Home & Cottage by Elizabeth Edwards
Sara and Paul Matthews call their head-turning home, located in a sweet neighborhood just up the hill from downtown Petoskey, “a very human story.” Indeed it is. Sara and her husband, Paul, have a special-needs son as well as an energetic middle-school daughter. This home has an answer for everyone. Located down the street from the school, it is ideally situated for their daughter and a self-contained apartment off the great room accommodates all their son’s needs while giving his caretakers privacy—and the family theirs. The Matthews began the building process by taking their thoughts and
needs to Stephanie Baldwin and her team at Edgewater Design Group. Beyond the above considerations, they wanted their new home to be low maintenance and to stand out architecturally, “But not so much that anyone would complain that it didn’t work in our neighborhood,” says Sara. “We
were thrilled that Edgewater listened to us and were able to give us a unique-looking house that is meeting all our needs.” Lombardy LLC built this handsome home with Paul working alongside the construction crew throughout the project. The low maintenance exterior is a cutting-edge blend of stacked stone, black corrugated steel, black framed windows and Douglas fir soffits—elements that add up to an organic contemporary look. The use of black steel, including interior beams and the staircase system, lend an industrial vibe that is courtesy of the Matthews’ friend Dan Mello of Trimet Industries in Traverse City. The couple first met Dan, a metal fabricator, a number of years ago, right around the time they found out that their then two-year-old son would never be able to walk. After the couple explained to Dan that they couldn’t find a solution for a child who wasn’t big enough for a wheelchair, he designed a comfortable, rolling chair that was just perfect. They still use it. The couple’s gratitude for the chair resulted in a trusting relationship with Dan, so it was natural for them to welcome his talents into their home-building process. A maple floor finished to bring out all of its color-tones envelops the room in warmth. Alder doors and trim and a Doug fir ceiling reflect that warmth. Clearstory windows and floor-to-ceiling window banks fill the space with light—and with views of the spacious grounds that will
become a canvas for Paul, a retired landscaper. The couple’s vibrant art pieces play off against modernist furniture and lighting that is due to an inspired collaboration between Sara and interior designer Kelly Paulsen. “She was absolutely instrumental to the project,” Sara says. “I went through
two designers before I finally found Kelly.” The open clean-lined kitchen, butler’s pantry outfitted with a beverage center and Miele coffee machine (that allows guests to wait on themselves when Sara is cooking), and an outdoor room that centers around a wood-burning fireplace, all make for easy,
fabulous entertaining. A den just off the great room houses the big-screen television and Sara’s loom—
making for relaxing evenings of weaving, game watching and togetherness. Tourgoers will leave understanding that this house is everything great design should be. Form following function—and solving very human issues with soul-soothing style.
