Rear addtion to the Miller Residence

Traditional Exterior, DC Metro

This McLean Tudor was transformed by a small addition with a big idea! The existing rear family room, shown in the before photo below, provided desirable space but presented an awkward composition. We determined, with modest alterations, the former shed roof structure could enliven the overall Tudor appearance and restore the home's connection with its woodland rear yard. First, two symmetrical pavilions, housing a new office and laundry/mud room, were placed at either end of the family room. Their hip roofs reference the main house. In between the pavilions, the family room eaves were extended outward to create a covered colonnade. Mimicking the front entry, low curving brick walls extend the house proper outward to embrace the back yard. This small addition transforms the sum of its parts to a greater whole!
