Coburg Frieze is a purified design that questions what’s really needed. The interwar property was transformed into a long-term family home that celebrates lifestyle and connection to the owners’ much-loved garden. Prioritising quality over quantity, the crafted extension adds just 25sqm of meticulously considered space to our clients’ home, honouring Dieter Rams’ enduring philosophy of “less, but better”. We reprogrammed the original floorplan to marry each room with its best functional match – allowing an enhanced flow of the home, while liberating budget for the extension’s shared spaces. Though modestly proportioned, the new communal areas are smoothly functional, rich in materiality, and tailored to our clients’ passions. Shielding the house’s rear from harsh western sun, a covered deck creates a protected threshold space to encourage outdoor play and interaction with the garden. This charming home is big on the little things; creating considered spaces that have a positive effect on daily life.

We retained the original U shaped footprint and decided to encroached under the stairs for more storage, fridge placement, higher push lift up cabinets along with more full height cabinets into dining area. This enabled us to increase the size of the peninsular bench and we curved the edges in order to improve the flow into and out of the kitchen, no sharp corners to bump into. We used a sensor tap for ease of use given our client had weak wrists. Lo & Co pull handles with a hatched finish were used so that our client could simple place her hands inside the handle to pull the drawer or cupboard open and the textured finished help with grip. For the corner cabinet we used Le Mans II corner unit mechanisms from Hafele for maximum storage in the corners and these also had a open rail section where our client could insert her hands into the side rails for ease of operation. With the higher cupboards we made them electric so that our client only had to push them open to operate and then a button to close which were within her reach. For interest we made the peninsular bench with half round battens along with a custom bespoke rangehood also with blackened bronze that fully enclosed the rangehood and made it easier to clean. We installed 2 custom American Oak timber floating shelves to warm up the space one with a curved end over the peninsular to prevent any heads being knocked. For sophistication we installed several Zetr outlets, no switching of gpos. Rather than a natural porous stone we opted for Lavistone Ocean Wave that had a similar look to Carrera alas less maintenance and a better price and we returned this up the wall for continuity. The pantry had pull out drawers again for ease of use. The Neff oven had a fully retractable door so that it was never in the way, plus all push button operation no dials as well as an induction stove – easy to use and clean for our client.

SDA ArchitectsSDA Architects
After the second fallout of the Delta Variant amidst the COVID-19 Pandemic in mid 2021, our team working from home, and our client in quarantine, SDA Architects conceived Japandi Home. The initial brief for the renovation of this pool house was for its interior to have an "immediate sense of serenity" that roused the feeling of being peaceful. Influenced by loneliness and angst during quarantine, SDA Architects explored themes of escapism and empathy which led to a “Japandi” style concept design – the nexus between “Scandinavian functionality” and “Japanese rustic minimalism” to invoke feelings of “art, nature and simplicity.” This merging of styles forms the perfect amalgamation of both function and form, centred on clean lines, bright spaces and light colours. Grounded by its emotional weight, poetic lyricism, and relaxed atmosphere; Japandi Home aesthetics focus on simplicity, natural elements, and comfort; minimalism that is both aesthetically pleasing yet highly functional. Japandi Home places special emphasis on sustainability through use of raw furnishings and a rejection of the one-time-use culture we have embraced for numerous decades. A plethora of natural materials, muted colours, clean lines and minimal, yet-well-curated furnishings have been employed to showcase beautiful craftsmanship – quality handmade pieces over quantitative throwaway items. A neutral colour palette compliments the soft and hard furnishings within, allowing the timeless pieces to breath and speak for themselves. These calming, tranquil and peaceful colours have been chosen so when accent colours are incorporated, they are done so in a meaningful yet subtle way. Japandi home isn’t sparse – it’s intentional. The integrated storage throughout – from the kitchen, to dining buffet, linen cupboard, window seat, entertainment unit, bed ensemble and walk-in wardrobe are key to reducing clutter and maintaining the zen-like sense of calm created by these clean lines and open spaces. The Scandinavian concept of “hygge” refers to the idea that ones home is your cosy sanctuary. Similarly, this ideology has been fused with the Japanese notion of “wabi-sabi”; the idea that there is beauty in imperfection. Hence, the marriage of these design styles is both founded on minimalism and comfort; easy-going yet sophisticated. Conversely, whilst Japanese styles can be considered “sleek” and Scandinavian, “rustic”, the richness of the Japanese neutral colour palette aids in preventing the stark, crisp palette of Scandinavian styles from feeling cold and clinical. Japandi Home’s introspective essence can ultimately be considered quite timely for the pandemic and was the quintessential lockdown project our team needed.
