Biotope Architecture and Interiors specialises in designing buildings that have a minimal impact on the ecology of the site, discreet additions that complement the existing, and bespoke interiors that are crafted through collaborations with local makers. We have experience in the design of environmentally conscious and passive projects, sympathetic yet contemporary alterations and additions to heritage-listed properties, and can provide economic design solutions. Our designs for heritage projects focus on context and seek to enhance the connection to site through careful consideration of spatial composition. Through attention to both the immediate and broader landscape, indoor and outdoor spaces are considered holistically in the design. We approach each project as a collaboration between the client and the heritage bodies, and focus on retaining and working with as much of the original heritage fabric as possible while transforming the building into a space that suits the current and future needs of the client. Passive design principles and renewable material selection are considered in every project. We focus on creating buildings that are sited appropriately with minimal impact on the ecology of the site; design spaces that connect to the broader landscape; orientate the house suitably to incorporate passive solar design principles; and use building elements, including courtyards and skylights, to connect to the external environment and surrounding skyscapes. Our aim is to enhance and enrich daily life through our designs. We enjoy working collaboratively with our clients, the consultancy team, builders and makers, to create bespoke buildings which are site and client responsive: where life seamlessly meets place.

I decided some 3 years ago to renovate my existing country home at Flowerpot south of Hobart to take in the amazing water/ island views.I added a new master bedroom with a bathroom to the house. I contacted 3 Architectual firms and invited them to separate interviews at my property and Rosa from Biotope Architecture Company was the first. I passed on what my expectations were and Rosa then asked many questions and put forward her views and at the end of 3 hours I was so impressed I engaged Biotope to design my dream home on the spot.The look on Rosa's face is something I will never forget. Rosa came up with her first design and apart from a couple of small changes I gave her the ok to proceed. She indicated what she thought the build would cost taking into consideration building costs rising due to Covid impact.I added a 3rd bedroom with a bathroom which included a bath to her design a few weeks later. Along with getting Consultants on board it took around 10 months fir approval from Council. I engaged a reputable Builder and work started on the 4th December 2021. During the build Rosa was always available to discuss the build with me even though I acted as the Project manager. In summing up Rosa produced a stunning home ,way beyond my expectations. I engaged my Sydney Interior Designer to do the lounge/dinning furniture in a Scandanavian style to compliment Rosa's stunning interior. Thruout Rosa was very professional,her attention to detail,care and support when I was having my doubts the build would never finish. I am forever grateful to Rosa and her small team and I have no hesitation in recommending her to anyone considering a renovation or a new build thank you Rosa....

Rosa understood our needs and was engaged, thorough and quietly friendly but firm. We enjoyed working with her. Our cold, dark and inward looking house is now a beautiful, light and practical home with wonderful details and carefully framed views of our garden and bushland. We were delighted to work with Rosa (from Biotope Architecture.interiors) on the rebuild and extension of our 1850s sandstone house in central Hobart. This project was a labour of love and, thus, it was paramount to have an architect that was sympathetic to both the heritage aspects of the structure and to the design necessities of modern life. This was achieved through thoughtful and delicate considerations that yielded a result far beyond what we could’ve imagined! We are ecstatic with the final result.
