Re-design of kitchen

Hello Everyone!
I’m looking for ideas on how to give this kitchen a freshen up. At this stage I would like to re-use what I can as we have just purchased the property and don’t have spare $$ to install a brand new kitchen. You ideas / colour scheme / redesign ideas would be appreciated.

I’d change the handles backsplash and fan. Maybe look at lighting. Assuming cabinet and bench tops are in good nick.

I agree with Kate's comments.

Change the fluorescent light fitting to something much nicer in LED or match the other recessed fittings. Put LED strip lights under the overhead cupboards to shine onto the bench.

I'd probably change the blinds to a lighter colour to match the walls.

It looks like you can't change the flooring without doing the whole area so leave that as is unless it is not in a good condition.

Definately change the cabinet handles but also look at changing the upper cabinets to a lighter colour to match the walls or black. There appears to be black elsewhere in the stairs. If the budget extends to it, you could update that whole wall, either with just those upper cabinets or depending on what is on the other side of that wall, build in that wall to include a proper pantry beside the fridge. See below.

Additional cabinetry would need to be done in the new colour to avoid miss matching the existing timber.

If you do some new cabinets, your existing upper cabinets could be changed so the lower level is one consistant line rather than having the step you currently have.

Changing the benchtop is an expensive option but you might want to get the circular end cut back to square to give it an updated look. If you want a breakfast bar, add one at table height to part of the peninsular where there are no cupboards facing that side so you use chairs rather than stools. Do this in white if you can't match the black granite.

As timber, white and black are considered neutral, you could add a splash of colour or pattern with an awesome tile choice for the splashback. See below also. There are so many options for splashbacks. Tiles are my favourite but you can also use sheet metal like copper for an interesting effect. Sooo many options but go for what you like that fits your budget.

@ Ba Beltramo, I think this dilemma might be better solved if we we had pictures, as suggested by rahnch but if that is too difficult to provide, it would help if you supplied more information about exactly where this pool sits as opposed to the home and what size and shape it is including the lay of the land, pool fencing etc... I'm a little concerned about some of the suggestions that even talk of possibly destroying the pool although I have nothing personally against the suggestion providing you are well informed and take into account what will best suit you personally. After reading you dilemma heading again, "Re-design the space AFTER pool" I'm now assuming that the pool may already be gone and you have a huge hole where it once sat?? If that's the case, then it could be as simple as filling the hole in as you suggested yourself. If the pool is still in place and you are considering filling it in, then I would be concerned about your thoughts to effectively destroy it when I personally know just how costly is it to have a pool in the first place with many people who could only dream of having one!! At the end of the day, your property must work for you but I would hope you give it allot of thought before you do anything.

Is your final photo of the vanity you already have? I also thought adding legs would take it back to the MCM you are after. Would be interesting to know how the silver drawer pull is attached. Not sure about painting it matte black as I thought timber furnishings were more prevalent then, but it's totally your choice. I hope you will post updates as you go. I just love mid-century.

I had not thought of the the off-centre solid wall suggestion in the tv room. This will make the space more functional. Very helpful. Thanks. Siriuskey – your design was similar to oklouise’s, so again many thanks for this. I like what you did with the entry area so will see if I can make this work given the dimensions of the house. BTW - the house is brick but I am thinking of partly limewashing/whitewashing it - but this is a very low priority item right now. Dr Retro – thanks for your comments. Appreciated. Yes, I'll check the sizing of furniture etc. Kate – thanks for your question re: wall at the end of the dining area. I’d like to create an attractive focal point from the kitchen to the garage wall, rather than just have an off-centre garage door (i.e. going for a look more like the below). I’d also like more storage so I added the partition wall, which could also have cupboards on the garage side. But your vestibule idea could work too. I will look into that while taking into account the other ideas from houzzers here too. All very helpful. Thank you. Dreamer – thanks for your suggestions as well. These give me food for thought so need to ponder more. I’m not sure there will be enough space for a fridge and an island but will draw it up and see. Just to give you more info here, not essential, but I would have liked to be able to have another tv (hidden in a wall-mounted cabinet) on the existing east-west wall that divides the kitchen-tv-formal zones now where the tv faces the kitchen so I can watch the news while cooking. I have looked at adding storage to the entry area as I think the house needs more storage so I will look at this some more again. Thanks again. Not only a pretty strange design IMO , but the colours seem all over the place . The cupboards at the rear look a deep black , the bench looks more a grey and even a slight blue tinge on the end ( I assume it is the same all over , just looks different in different light ? ) . Then the splashback has brownish almost military khaki tones , and the blind is a sort of beigey brown , the floor is a sort of almond colour while that door is a different tone again . Then most of the appliances ( cooktop etc ) look black , except the curved glass and stainless range hood . At least the cupboard handles stick to the black theme , but again it could be a trick of the light , but the ones along the cooktop side look narrower than the 'island' side ones . To me , it looks like someone has looked at brochures and picked 1 category , someone else a 2nd , someone else yet another lot -- no continuity .

Love the ideas from Kate and Christine, I think adding a black tap, removing the current lighting and adding a light bar above island would look great, if replacing fan go with black also, black handles would look great with the timber.

Update the blind, a couple of stools at the end of the bench , add beautiful accessories but keep it minimal, you can achieve this without any major structural changes and it will look beautiful without costing huge $.

All great ideas, I would paint the wall cabinets to save money replacing them. New lights, tiles, handles and perhaps have a go at enclosing the round end of the island with timber battens as Kaboodle shows in this link.

If you don’t have a pantry I would look at changing that isolated lower double cabinet to tall pantry, closing up some of the opening.
