A Stunning Kitchen & Laundry Transformation of a Traditional Terrace home in Inner City Sydney

This project was one of my all time faves and we completely transformed it from boxy, dark and dated to open, sun drenched and more suited to modern living!

The brief was to:

  • Update the kitchen and laundry and to bring in more natural light.
  • Make the spaces more open and modern and include somewhere to eat in the kitchen.
  • Maximise storage and add in a generous pantry while keeping the laundry, a compact yet functional space
  • Make it look less ‘kitchen-y’ by concealing as many appliances as possible
  • Make it a happy inviting space through colour but to keep the style sympatico with the house’s traditional elements

The project began – as most do – with demolition but this one involved knocking down the whole back wall as well as some internal walls, removing a large solid old fireplace in the kitchen and making existing windows into doorways. One of the best uses of space was to keep the exiting hallway as the new pantry and powder room.

We went with classic black and white tiles and a traditional profile on the doors and drawers. We hand painted the cabinetry a powder blue which can be easily changed should the house be sold or if the owners want a change!

Integrating the fridge and dishwasher and having a generous bin drawer went part way to concealing the appliances so pocket doors for the ovens and breakfast nook complete the hide-and-seek aspect to the room. There are even pocket doors for a concealed tv!

The island is over 4m long and includes a generous bar table at the end for casual family meals. The island includes on one side the dishwasher, a bin and double sink and along the other side, storage for glassware and vases.

Under the large windows at the end of the room is an upholstered bench and four generous drawers for school bags, sports paraphernalia, and kids’ shoes.

The laundry has a generous work bench with a drying rail and storage above.

The powder room features some fun vibrant wallpaper as well as lots of storage.

The huge pantry provides storage for vacuums, mops, ironing board and cleaning supplies in a tall cabinet and long, open shelves and work bench provide lots of space for food, small appliances etc.

The project took approximately four months to complete and the end result injected glamour layered with pops of happy colours into each space, creating the perfect place to come home too!
