Love or loathe? French provincial style

A few years back, everything seemed to have a touch of Paris with its ornate flourishes and curling trims.

In my last home, we removed our french doors and replaced them with large pane concertina doors, in an effort to make the doors disappear as much as possible.

Are you still a fan of the carved wood and decoration of French Provincial style?

I never have liked this style and still don't, but it does suit some homes.

It's ok, if you like something a bit more formal, as in the image, or you can distress it and make it more country, or you can paint the furniture with bold gloss paint to make it Hollywood Regency or international. Whatever you like.

I would also think about the tactile, to assist with bringing a 'homey' feel to the room. Hand made candles and candlestands, picture frames, cookbooks with book ends etc. Also like the pressed tin splashback. Great job!

You are right, many just have the facade only. Which is crazy as its just a 'front', pun not indented......It all comes down to the costs involved.....$75k sounds a bit excessive to change the rest of the roof to match the front, considering the cheaper pitched rear roof area has costs involved which should be taken out from the quote......what was it including specifically? Have a chat with the designer about roof. Was it your own designer used or the reputable custom builder's designer. Some home builders tend have the designs and associated construction details and engineering drawings already drawn up hence the cheaper initial costs but excessive if you're wishing to amend the plans such as a full mansard roof rather than just to the facade. I'd shop around a bit more, not to get the whole house built cheaper but to get what you want to have, once completed. Good builders should be paid well but they shouldn't gouge the client.

Mince pies, pudding, christmas cake are old fashioned, cold weather inherited traditions in my personal opinion, so when I started my own family I threw out these particular 'old' ways and invented our new family traditions. If anyone comes to my house during christmas and I know they love these things, I buy individual puddings etc just for them. Its just puzzling to me why the new settlers didn't embrace our island culture and extreme heat, my grandmother had no electricity but they would light up the old fuel stove and she would slavingly cook for 15 or more - Wow that is commitment! LOL - and here I am, a real individual but I've had to adapt as I am gluten intolerant and I have MS - so there you go - I think the universe is trying to tell me something LOL...

I like that floor but find most French style decor & furnishings too fussy these days. The odd piece here and there is ok, without it dictating the style of the room. As previous poster suggested painting a single piece in a bold colour can provide a nice accent, in a bedroom for example.
