I have also done multiple property courses inc Reno Kings and in the property development for 25 years. While the above suggestions are good they are missing the "best & highest use" master plan for the property. Even if you don't want to do the "bigger picture" now for yourselves, you need to be aware of what that could be for you or for others (who buy your home later) so you don't spend money unnecessarily or do the wrong reno or over capitalise and then don't leave something in the deal for the next person to do. (Future re-sale development potential) I can already see half a dozen things to consider before you make these decisions you've raised and getting to know you and your families future plans for the home is important before any advice can be given on all of the above. Can you post any more photos including the staircase, and how the room next to the staircase is accessed interesting extension not following in the traditional manner of the house, Always follow KISS, keep it simple S for the best result. You could add a traditional front door in black but I don't think it necessary as from what I can see in the photo is the entrance and door already have a lot of character. The lovely Picket will look less fussy if done in one colour quoting Taking the new build/old build divide quite literally, the existing cottage has been redefined as a crisp white entity. In a street of Heritage vernacular, where every architectural shift is picked out in a nuanced tone, this is a drastic departure in itself. you may find that you have a local powder coating company who can recolour the Colobond fence.. probably more expensive but better finish than handpainting and the neighbour may be interested in having the other side done as well (but you could also get a quote to replace the steel sheets and just hand paint the posts) and we always use very dark grey on fences and Colorbond Wooodland Grey is excellent fence colour
