White or grey/black grout?

Hi Everyone, we have just finished tiling our new kitchen and need help deciding on white, grey or black grout. As the tiles are not yet grouted the shadow lines give us a good indication of what a darker grout will look like but our concern is that it may be 'too much' with the natural sandstone wall, Carrara marble and a Dulux Antique (dark green) island bench. Too many things competing directs me back to keeping the backsplash simple and let the natural stones be the feature. Note the sandstone still needs to be built to the floor on both sides of the supporting column.
Thoughts, advice and opinions please. Thanks in advance. Ax

Light grout - darker one will look dirty/unfinished. A black and white artwork with a splash of colour would look great on the left of the shutter above the sink or an oversized black and white clock + greenery!

Thanks Lee, seems I've posted twice. Thanks for your advice. I had purposely left the space for a clock but I might see if the print works with the room too. Such great suggestions, light grout it is.

ondering if you could tell me what your sandstone wall is (cladding, real stone blocks, etc). we are planning to do this behind our heaater in new family room, but having trouble finding something that looks authentic. cheers. oh, and definately white grout. classic, to match everything else, dark grout looks too busy, and will date really fast. (IMHO)

My suggestion is first talk to the builder to see what instructions he gave the tiler as i'm sure he doesn't want a dissatisfied client. Most tilers will check with the builder before grouting especially when a colour is not specified in a contract. I would then ask if the grout could be replaced, from the looks of it it will only be a couple of hours work. There is nothing worse than having to look at something you are not happy with. I would not use the paint product as it will alway look like it is covering a mistake. White will look better. Make sure the mixer body is waterproofed or you will have a leak in your wall, the membrane should lap onto the body from the wall if it is done well. All the best.

Personally , I think it depends on the colours in the rest of your house . If it is colourful , then carry that through -- if it is predominately red and yellow , then use that for your pendent lights ( and towels and liquid soap dispenser ) , same if it is predominately blue or green or brown or purple -- well , maybe cut down on the purple haha . I'm not a fan of monochromatic , but if thats your theme , then go with the black pendents , but carry it through with a glass fronted 50's inspired Black and White picture ( and yellow or orange or red towels ? ) .

I agree, light grout. My initial reaction was dark (I love that subway look with defined grout lines) but once I had seen the variety of surfaces in your room my preference turned to white. Don't want 'busy' competing with the marble and stone.

Mid grey is what we a,ways use. Defines the tiles otherwise they looh insipid.

I would usually say mid grey - both for looks and easy cleaning - but with that lovely sandstone definitely white.

I'd say white grout except for the fact that the splash back is going behind your stove - White will be hard to keep clean! I'd go for mid-grey

I think white grout is the way to go - I have white tiles in my bathrooms and laundry and unwittingly went with grey grout. Long story short, it looks dirty and quite ordinary. White grout will make your splash back clean and fresh looking.

There are heaps of lines, lines, lines already "featured" in this area! The overhead cabinets, shutter, drawers, front of breakfast bar cabinetry, sandstone wall ...

By going black grout - you will be drawing attention to and emphasizing the overload of lines ...

By going black grout, you may have to deal with the black and white giving you cross-eyes while cooking!

So - obviously - I'm cheering for the "go white" team!

I would go a light grout to keep the look fresh. However I would also seal the grout with a quality sealer, so that just a wipe and they stay clean. The thing with tiles in kitchens (especially behind a stove) is they quickly get dirty. And eventually you have to re-grout as what you have is either dark with dirt or disappearing because you've had to scrub to remove marks etc.

That sandstone wall is beautiful - actually it all is! But you do have a lot of colours/textures and 'feature' pieces that draw the eye, so whilst I love darker grout look, I definitely think it will be too busy. I'd go with white-light grey.

Thank you for all your comments and advice. We did a white grout and as I originally thought it looked balanced letting the focal point be the stone.
We have since sold our beautiful home. Now to make another house a home filled with memories.
