Hi Gioenne. Not really. We purchased "advanced" Lilly Pillies for along the back of the fence. They're about the same height as the fence (1.8m). We've also been keeping the interior blinds partially lowered / closed. At the moment, we don't have any outdoor furniture so privacy while relaxing or entertaining outside hasn't been a big problem. Once we have purchased some outdoor furniture we'll re-evaluate the situation depending upon how much the Lilly Pillies have grown. With all of the other "new home" expenses, we'll probably just entertain in full view of our neighbours!

Add a couple of outdoor mirrors in strategic spots on the fence. Plant things in front of them to suggest additional depth to your garden. If you are worried about the fence, prop them on something low and lean them against the fence with a garden in front. I'd possibly look at painting the fence a dark colour and plant light green or coloured plants in front. I have a beautiful one that has pink leaves that glows in the sunlight. Add a mirror and you could create a beautiful space.

You've probably already done this... but, speak to a local horticulturist. They understand the local conditions, including the heatwave of which you spoke. Make sure they are qualified. You would be surprised how many unqualified people, who like plants, run nurseries.

Has no-one any idea how totally destructive ALL Ficus plants are - especially around pools. If people dont know anything at all about plants, then they should leave advice to the experts. Ficus have horrific root systems. It may take 10 to 20 years for the damage to become evident, but the damage costs a lot of money to resolve. Experienced and plant knowledgeable garden designers know NEVER to use Ficus in any situation other than in pots - and even here they need to be raised pots off the ground. Do not offer advice if you are plant ignorant. Many landscapers plant and walk away, with no accountability for their flawed advice or landscaping. They can be sued for this. Plant growers grow these plants because of the demand - not because they are good plants. A reputable Horticulturist-designer would never suggest Ficus planted into a garden - especially around a pool. Their roots are shockers.
