Fencing Advice

Hello,
Our house (on a corner block) currently has a side fence, but around the front we lose our yard to the nature strip. We have young children and would like to better use our front yard.

We would like to heighten the fence on the side (giving us more privacy) and extend it around the front. We'd also like to widen our driveway and level out the front yard (to house level), removing the tree on the right hand side (this has been approved already due to it's health).

I'm unclear on who we approach to do this - a builder or a landscaper, and how we come up with a great fence design. Ideas are welcomed!!

This would be a job for a landscaper.
A landscaper will be able to excavate your front yard to the house level and should be able to remove the tree if not too big (otherwise an arborist will do that). It's hard to see from the photo the height difference from the house to the current ground level but you may also have to do some retaining before you erect the fence.
You have many fence options, in keeping with your rendered house you can do a brick fence and render it or their are some lovely timber fencing designs these days which you can paint. I suggest you drive by some nice housing areas to get some inspiration on the fencing designs you like. I am not sure if all landscapers do fencing though, you may need to find someone that specialises.

An arborist or tree lopper should definitely remove the tree if it's a large one as they have the knowledge, equipment and insurances to perform such duties.

There are people who specialize in fence building, depending on the materials you select.

The driveway and levelling is a landscaper's area of expertise and if you decide on a masonry fence then the landscaper will be able to prepare the footing and either build the wall or engage a brickie or stonemason.

If you type in 'Photos' along the top bar of the Houzz home page and then type in 'Fences', there a thousands of fence photos. They may offer inspiration on how to deal with the variety of fencing issues you have and also give you an idea of what style might suit your house.

Of course your budget will ultimately determine the type of fence you select.

Hi, its very common to have a structure on a boundary with a parapet wall. We are just finishing up some landscaping (dig out the old dead weeds, new trees and lawn) and painted the one below in Taubmans Zelda. Have to do a bit of touch up where we levelled further and a mow to finish but you can see it makes a great backdrop.

Looking at adding something like this onto of the wall. Perhaps increasing the balustrades and incorporating the timber or aluminium slats with a new electric gate. So still has some level of privacy with some plants on the footpath side. Plants an hedges inside the property hopefully to reach the height of the fence in time.

Dear Laura, I recommend checking with your local council before committing to any major fence works, as if it is completed wrong you will be liable to pull it down again. I believe the following would look lovely for curb appeal, a half rendered or brick and metalwork fence. This type of fence showcases your garden and allows your border collie to see things going by.
