Yes, the shelves are at angle, roughly 40 degrees (similar to louvered shutters). The surface area of the shelves (from front edge to the back) is roughly 5.5". The projection of the entire piece is also roughly 5.5", measured perpendicular from the wall to the front of the piece.
In the above photo, the tan book is roughly 8" wide. About 5.5" of the book rests on the shelf, with about 2.5" of the book projecting off the shelf.
