Kitchen re-design

We have a beautiful house with original 90's kitchen and have decided to update. We are going with Freedom (as they were the only kitchen company that actually returned calls and turned up (Canberra)). We are not 100% on the new design, u shaped with pantry where the fridge is now. We would love to fit an island in - can anyone offer a suggestion? I would also like advice on bench top - we have terracotta tiles in the kitchen/living which are staying so needs to compliment. The wall is staying. Thank you!

Hmmm. What are the dimensions?

If you are happy to eat into the other area, you could extend the kitchen bench to the end of the wall, and stick an island in the middle. I htink it should be at least 600mm deep.

Did you mean to have the island in the middle?

Or did you mean you are still open to changing the total layout?

I thunk a bench that is also a breakfast bar would work well for you...

Hello there. From your photos, your kitchen in its original state look tucked away and a bit of an after thought. I cannot see what is on the other side of that wall where the existing cook top is but if you were to open up this wall a bit, I think it would assist in the overall feel of the kitchen. If you can, I'd extend the length of the kitchen by adding an extra depth bench in the area of the sink and perhaps even ask Freedom to design your new kitchen with an extra cabinet there. Where that stool is situated in the photo. Sorry to have to be the one to break the news to you, but if your plumbing for the sink goes straight down into the concrete floor (??) you'll have to keep the sink where it is and release the hope of having an island. Just square up that section there, for a more modern look. A tip for making a small kitchen look bigger, is to take away as much tall units (eg the tall microwave cabinet) as you possibly can and stick to a neat and simple row of wall cabinets. Hope you end up with a kitchen you love.

Is your final photo of the vanity you already have? I also thought adding legs would take it back to the MCM you are after. Would be interesting to know how the silver drawer pull is attached. Not sure about painting it matte black as I thought timber furnishings were more prevalent then, but it's totally your choice. I hope you will post updates as you go. I just love mid-century.

Hi siriuskey, it's actually quite a big house, just awkwardly laid out. There are two other bathrooms - a main bathroom and an ensuite - and the laundry will just be a stacked washer and dryer, so not much space required. Yes, I think one door is a better option for the layout too. The house is on a very good sized corner block. The dining room side is open to a car parking deck, no roof. There is a flowering hedge between the dining room window and the car park area so visually it's private and allows good sunlight. Off the family room is a large covered patio plus lawn and trees, and a large shed that will be turned into a home office. Adjacent to the dining room is a bedroom and past that (so the opposite side of the house to the dining room and car park area), is the neighbouring fence. So there is only a narrow walkway between the house and the fence.

thank you for your advise. I have put images of the outside of the house as that where the dining room is from there we will be bringing the decking out 3 metres which will create an out - indoor eating. this is the most finished room giving you an idea of the colour and house. all blue grey tones. sorry about stuff around but a reno house is hard to find spaces below is kitchen as is looking out to the dining through that open servery but we are taking most of that wall out to make an open space - its very small step down below into the dining through the left door way. below is the now dining. the table is very small and hard to pull chairs in and out of hence the indoor out door considerations. belwo is the outdoor looking in. from those doors we are putting a 3 metre decking i think. we have a lot of yard so its easy to do

I had not thought of the the off-centre solid wall suggestion in the tv room. This will make the space more functional. Very helpful. Thanks. Siriuskey – your design was similar to oklouise’s, so again many thanks for this. I like what you did with the entry area so will see if I can make this work given the dimensions of the house. BTW - the house is brick but I am thinking of partly limewashing/whitewashing it - but this is a very low priority item right now. Dr Retro – thanks for your comments. Appreciated. Yes, I'll check the sizing of furniture etc. Kate – thanks for your question re: wall at the end of the dining area. I’d like to create an attractive focal point from the kitchen to the garage wall, rather than just have an off-centre garage door (i.e. going for a look more like the below). I’d also like more storage so I added the partition wall, which could also have cupboards on the garage side. But your vestibule idea could work too. I will look into that while taking into account the other ideas from houzzers here too. All very helpful. Thank you. Dreamer – thanks for your suggestions as well. These give me food for thought so need to ponder more. I’m not sure there will be enough space for a fridge and an island but will draw it up and see. Just to give you more info here, not essential, but I would have liked to be able to have another tv (hidden in a wall-mounted cabinet) on the existing east-west wall that divides the kitchen-tv-formal zones now where the tv faces the kitchen so I can watch the news while cooking. I have looked at adding storage to the entry area as I think the house needs more storage so I will look at this some more again. Thanks again. From the photos you have provided, it looks like your kitchen space is quite cosy. To accommodate a island bench you mentioned before we would suggest a corner kitchen, keeping your pantry within the corner however making it built in with your cabinetry in the photo posted below. (Photo a idea for cabinet layout, different materials and style in accordance with your design).

To make you design flow, next to your corner pantry we would suggest your appliances are built in to the cabinetry with the fridge against the far right wall. This would then provide a whole bench top with overhead cabinetry which could feature a splash back to your liking that would blend with your terracotta tiles.

Within the island bench we would suggest you have your sink and a integrated dishwasher to maximise space within the kitchen when cooking.

Island bench example, make one side functional with integrated dishwasher and bins with sink, and the other a dining option to merge with the kitchen, however this would depend on measurements within your kitchen space.
