The vintage green tiles in the first picture are lovely. The darker ones below with the bevelled edges are just so wrong in the setting shown. I am also a lover of green but you have to get the right tone and keep the shape as smooth and flat as possible. I am a big believer in having just one standout element of design in a tile - either its unusual in shape with a matt finish or a special colour with no fussy edges.

Subway Tiles make great splach backs. Capping the subway tiles with an Atrim aluminium trim would add the finishing touch, nothing looks worse than the raw edge of tiles being exposed. (It just looks unfinished) You could use powdercoated white trim which would finish the tile while blending into the tiles or you could get a much bolder look by using the anodized matt silver which will match your grout and frame your splash back.

Hi Caroline, A few inspiration photos for you, try using subway tiles in a stacked style for a modern contemporary look, much more stylish than the overdone normal subway look, would look great in both areas, your tile store will advise the size of tile that will best suit your requirements.

We had a glass splashback for over 10 years. I loved how easy to clean it was and it had a simple minimalist feel. The previous house had tiles- you will always have the issue of cleaning the grout and at some point I always had a stain I couldn’t get out - not sure if they have different grout now but I think at some point there will be a tomato sauce or saffron splash that you can’t get rid of.
