Window treatments - help!

Help me Houzzers, what can I do with these west facing windows that also need privacy from the street? Plantation shutters are most practical for privacy and insulation but will it look too country for the externally very modern looking extension, especially as each window would need four frames (like photo)? Or do we go ambiance blinds forever closed?The dilemma of a Victorian house with a modern extension! Was thinking curtains for sliding door - but is it best to have conformity? Aghhh!

I don't think the exterior will be too modern.

I love shutters but I'd be worried that the louvres wouldn't let in enough light and you'd end up having them pulled open, which means no privacy.

I'd consider a dual blind. Google day night blinds at Spotlight to see a budget example.

Shutters would look great and control summer heat and light Curtains are great for gliding doors fir same reason

Those are actually the same color. There is enough light coming through the windows. I feel like it will make my living room and dining area elegant. The blinds stay but it lacks style. Thank you so much!

With tilt and turn windows I can only think of two options, either face mounted shutters to the actual window, which the fabricator might offer, or a rod hung on the face of wall above the window opening, to avoid the window catching on them. A track sheer or drape will work aesthetically, but practically?? Presuming when the windows open, so too would the curtain, it only matters at the end of day when you want to close up and have privacy, so perhaps a holland blind (pull down) so it's least conspicuous.

Hi MJ, what a sweet cottage. I'd go for a thermal roller blind in the kitchen as it'll allow you to get your views and light, privacy of an evening and help maintain heat inside in winter - they're also easier to keep dusted roman blinds. In the bedroom, I'd go for a double railing with sheers that let light in during the day and then thermal and block out curtains to pull across of an evening. You would be able to pick up continuous thermal or block out curtains at Spotlight/Lincraft fairly cheaply - I like the continuous as you can have your curtains as full as you like). I wouldn't worry about lined curtains again as they're just far heavier and a pain in the butt with the amount of dust that both layers of fabric collect. I've got the thermal continous curtains in our bedrooms and have machine washed them and they were far less trouble when I was hemming them. In terms of thermal efficiency of your windows look at secondary glazing options - Magnetite, Ecoglaze and Justrite off options that you might find worth looking at (beats pulling out windows and replacing them).

I would suggest looking at a few, getting an idea of the type of blinds you are after, doing a cost comparison between them all. You might want to request an obligation free quote. Of course, depending on your location, some may be more suitable than others. I was going to suggest day/night blinds. They essentially have a total black out blind that you can roll up and use the day blind to allow light through. These will generally provide privacy during the day whilst allowing you to look out and provide ample lighting.

Shutters for those small windows may look quick heavy due to the amount of framing and they may impede light.

I'd consider getting a quote to replace the clear glass with opaque / frosted glass and then just installing simple roller blinds for the modern look. The total cost of replacing the glass and going with the cheaper roller blinds may end up being the same expense as plantation shutters.

The good old Queenslander cottages have external louvres over the windows so to have them will look great, be it modern or traditional. Could be painted timber?

I would suggest ziptrack external blinds. They totally enclose the outside window so the glass does not heat up the window glass like day/night blinds would do. We have ours at 85% blockout and the blackest shade possible. The darker they are the more you can see through them. I am amazed that they are so see through from any angle. I sometimes forget they are down. Not cheap but worth every penny. An updated version of the old exterior shutters . Remote controlled. We also have a wind sensor that puts the blind up on a windy day. Can't see in during the day at all.

Hi cprestonthomas if you want to maintain privacy with daytime light control, replacing the clear glass with white translucent glass is a great idea! Then for night time privacy a simple chain operated blockout roller blind on the reverse roll is the way to go. Is that another window beside your sliding doors? If so I don't think you have enough stack back for curtains. This means the curtain fabric would cover part of the glass on the sliding doors which would be extremely annoying for loss of light as well as ease of access. If the extension is quite modern, blockout roller blinds on both the sliding doors and window would work well here too. There are some fabulous roller blind fabrics these days in some great neutrals, colours and patterns.

Block out roller blinds are great. Curtains to me don't suit a modern interior.

What is the room used for with the large wind/door? Unless it is bedroom I would question why you need any window covering. Seems quite a private back yard?

Have you considered wooden blinds?- either wood or painted - they are cost effective - They deliver many elements of the shutter but are lighter and a good compromise between modern and traditional. check online for custom made deals.

As long as there is somewhere to pull it closed to you could think about a drape for the door. Depending on whether you need privacy or thermal qualities you could have a double track with a sheer either at the front or back of the lining/ outer drape.. Drapes are a good way to add texture, pattern and colour into the space.

Use wooden blinds. It's cost effective an lighter also it looks pretty good. You can design it @ qualityblinds.com.au and see for yourself which fits better!
