The steel cladding keeps it warm [looking] on the outside. It's the super tight, super insulated envelope, high efficiency windows, and witty conversation that keeps it cozy and comfortable on the inside.
If you're into the boring details: there are 4 inches of continuous, exterior rigid insulation under the cladding and 5.5 inches of blown-in fiberglass insulation in the stud bays. In the ceilng we have 3 inches of polyurethane spray insulation and 11 inches of blown-in fiberglass insulation in the joist bays. Every wall penetration and sheathing seam is caulked and every measure was taken to nearly eliminate air infiltration. Not much temperature change comes through these walls.
Using his smart phone the owner monitors the temperature year round with the Nest thermostat and reports that the temperatures stay comfortable with the HVAC rarely turning on.
Ultimately the steel cladding has negligible effect on the interior temperature, but is sure makes an impact on the exterior aesthetic!
The budget was modest [a relative term, I know]. But for our clients' privacy and trusted confidence, we never share specific project costs. We're sorry, but our policy is that our clients always come first.
