Australians call some household things by different names

Countertops are called benches, yards are called a gardens, closets-wardrobe, bonus room-rumpus room, hardwood floors or any wood is called timber. Living in the country is living in the Bush. If a room is painted and decorated in updated colors & pattens they are called “Fresh”. If a house is updated in higher end-sophisticated materials it’s called “smart”. Comments (37)Gosh what a funny turn around - this discussion started right after I had finished my last kitchen and now it is revived just as I'm going through all this madness again trying to replace a kitchen in my new home .............. when I can find someone interested in doing some work. Jennifer, I'm leaning to Bosch appliances if they meet my requirements. One of my joeys lives in Germany where Bosch and Siemens (made by the same company apparently) are made and are very highly esteemed. Because I have so much renovation work to do on this house, I'm watching my pennies a bit so I will probably stick with a Dishlex Dishwasher that has always served me well and these days they are extremely quiet too, but I am looking at Bosch for the oven and cooktops. In earlier posts I praised the Fisher and Paykel oven and cooktops, but then discovered a BIG flaw in the design of the oven - it had a double glass door with a gap between the two sheets of glass and guess where every crumb and spill went, so they will not be on my radar again. I'm also hearing good reports about Electrolux but very bad ones about Miele and their service which is really letting the brand down. For those getting on in years too - beware of push button settings and slide controls, arthritic fingers just cannot manage these. As well, I'm told the slide controls on cook tops are not as accurate as knobs....See MoreHelp! New house... Bad kitchen!!
Comments (32). Its just way too much timber! So the floor should stay, because its harder to change. Start by definitely at least pull out the part of the kitchen with the weird enclosed fridge space. that really cramps the room. Then pull of and replace the cabinet doors and the laminate bench top. pick some amazing tiles and have your husband work his magic! Paint the walls a nice colour to really make the space look more vibrant. Get rid of those horrible blinds completely! We are doing out kitchen up and we don't have much money or skills or access to tradespersons anyway. So we are keeping it to a minimum. Do it little by little. We started with a new stove with really changed the feel of the room. We plan to just paint the cabinets....See MoreWhite fridge or stainless steel?
Comments (41)Hmm. Folks I don't understand what is going on with these recent comments. The fridge dilemma was settled ages ago and I advised that I had settled on a stainless-steel fridge that worked well in my white kitchen. Just as an update, I had some problems with said fridge, calling for service several times and the fridge having to go back to the factory. Very unsatisfactory and inconvenient. They provided a loan fridge but as everyone knows, emptying and stocking fridges is not the most enjoyable pass time. After some discussions with F & P they were persuaded to replace the dud fridge with another similar fridge, although with the concealed handles. (Not my preference). I had to pay a small amount, but it came with a new fridge warranty. So dear people, I will close this conversation and give thanks to everyone for the input. Kind regards sydneymidge...See MoreKayley Hill
