Where do I start building company or architect
Comments (1)In NZ we have building companies who can alter their designs to get the traditional look. Their design departments have architectural designers working for them. This tends to be more cost effective than using an architect. We have built with a large reputable company in NZ and they drew up the look I wanted. However I sourced some things myself eg door handles, front door, vanities, splash backs. It's important that you check the building company is reputable as quite a few building companies in Christchurch NZ are having problems. Check with previous clients....See MoreLandscaping: where do I start?
Comments (1)Hi Mchawley, If you're new to gardening and don't have a particular style or goal in mind engage a landscaper - they'll be able to help you with designing an overall look that will work with the natural land (slowing down water movement through your property and offsetting any issues with great solutions that you may not have thought about) and help you build it and green it up with plant selections that will suit your property and tastes. If you're keen to learn and participate, most will be happy to accommodate you and you can work as labour (hard work but rewarding)....See MoreWhere do we start?
Comments (12)Hi millwood_s I'd first recommend (if you haven't) getting some background on the apartment: where do services run where are the loadbearing walls what approvals do you need from body corporate how will the project need to run given it's in an apartment building what other hoops will you need to jump through over and above standard building processes Then I would hire an architect, or an interior designer who is experienced at space planning (ie not simply furnishings, finishes and fixtures, but can plan and move spaces around. Understand the orientation of your apartment - which direction does it face. You're often limited in how much sunlight you can get into your apartment if it's not facing an optimum orientation, but understanding how that will work and what you can do in your planning and design to make the most of things, will serve you well. Finding a professional who is used to working within existing apartment buildings would be worthwhile, so they can assist you with navigating it. You'll have different things to contend with working inside an existing building that may have apartments below, above, and beside you. Best wishes with your project! Comments (7)Thanks for your input. I am as happy as I can be regarding layout. Never having renovated, I just don't know where to start. If I go to a designer, am I limited to their suggestions/suppliers? Do they handle organising the tradespeople? If I visit with a bathroom showroom and really like a vanity or a particular type of shower head and tap handles, etc...when do I run it by a plumber as to suitability for the space/existing connections? Sorry I am sounding naive.... As for the laundry...I know there isn't much room to do anything different to it, apart from having some built in cabinetry put it. Currently as it stands, there is an existing sink/trough that sits in one of those old metal cabinets (fixed), a front loader washing machine and a free standing wardrobe/cupboard. Window and door to yard at one end. (Sorry no pics to hand)...See More- 7 years ago
