What to do with 70s bronze aluminium window frames?

Our double brick 70's home was painted by previous owners in Dulux Stonecrop with trim/doors in Dulux Harold. House is due for a new coat of paint. The aluminium window frames are original weathered copper colour. Some of these are still in reasonable condition, however some need replacing due to worn lifting cables/seals, rattling in the wind etc. Can these be re-sealed to save replacing? And if we do replace some, (we are about to renovate laundry and change colour scheme) do we replace with the same original bronze colour to match frames on rest of house? Or do we go for a whole new window frame colour and paint the old frames to match? There are about 20 windows altogether, probably 4 or 5 need attention. Glad of any tips, thankyou.

Probably cheaper to replace with new windows unit actually, unless you can sort the seals, etc. yourself.

Some new houses are again using the bronze. Just doing a renovation and granny flat which is using the original bronze.

50 shades of grey is starting fall out of favour so people are looking at using something 'different'. Browns like Jasper Colorbond is becoming popular!

We have Jasper sliding doors etc. I would ask whoever is doing the new windows as to what might be able to be done with the few old windows that have problems, I know they do new matching screens.

So pleased to see the grey fading out.

I think the current window drapery or blinds you have are what is making the Windows look bad , try using a darker shade so that from the outside it doesn't mess with the look of the window

nomadicmel - I would not consider removing the window at all - ventilation is so important, or you will give yourself even more problems, especially if you are having a dryer in there. Have you given consideration to where that will be vented anyway. If you are planning ahead for teenagers (and good luck with that) having a bath in one room and a shower in the other will be a very good investment, teenagers are anal about their privacy, but do be very mindful of storage - a vanity in the laundry will really be important - just somewhere to put a hair dryer for example.

Hi Melanie yes this lovely brick colour does cause some grief for homeowners when wanting to update colour scheme without rendering.... !!!First of all I would recommend you keep the downpipes blended with the bricks rather than highlight them. Secondly I agree that charcoal grey would be two harsh against your brick colour so maybe look at a three tone colour scheme to breakdown the harshness of a dark colour against the light bricks. For example, dark on gutters and possibly on some smaller trims and mid tone on fascia and the vertical timbers.... obviously the 3rd colour is the brick colour...

Don't try and modernise this home, it has a lovely mid-century character that you should build on. I suggest to all of my clients that they should live in a home for at least 12 months before spending big renovation dollars. Understand how your house works with the change of seasons, and the existing electrical and plumbing services. Sometimes when you are on a tight budget in an old house then boring things like gutters and hot water systems are more important than supeficial aesthetics. Elements that are not original, such as your roller blinds at the front aren't contributing to the look of the house. The right landscaping could provide the shade you need and look much better. Thankyou, I am starting to lean towards the Jasper or even Wallaby, now that I have samples of them. I have had quotes done to replace the worst windows and was pleasantly surprised! So thinking we'll go with one of these colours when we start with the laundry. Glad of your advice, thankyou
