Dark dining table and chairs on a light timber floor?
Comments (6)I'll have the same dilemma when I eventually move. The first thing that I will be doing is buying some large, neutral coloured rugs, probably jute or sisal (or similar), to help juxtapose the light timber floors with the dark timber furniture. I think having a "break" between the two timber styles/colours is a good idea. I'll personally be aiming for some kind of combined Japanese and Scandinavian interior design. Here are a few photos which I'm intended on referencing to create an aethestically pleasing space with my existing furniture (until I can afford to replace it over time): [https://www.houzz.com.au/photos/home-design-the-azumi-asian-living-room-perth-phvw-vp~12023403[(https://www.houzz.com.au/photos/home-design-the-azumi-asian-living-room-perth-phvw-vp~12023403) [https://www.houzz.com.au/photos/home-design-the-azumi-asian-living-room-perth-phvw-vp~12023627[(https://www.houzz.com.au/photos/home-design-the-azumi-asian-living-room-perth-phvw-vp~12023627) [https://www.houzz.com.au/photos/home-design-the-azumi-asian-family-room-perth-phvw-vp~12023359[(https://www.houzz.com.au/photos/home-design-the-azumi-asian-family-room-perth-phvw-vp~12023359) [https://www.houzz.com.au/photos/home-design-the-azumi-asian-entry-perth-phvw-vp~12023440[(https://www.houzz.com.au/photos/home-design-the-azumi-asian-entry-perth-phvw-vp~12023440) [https://www.houzz.com.au/photos/wheelers-hill-project-contemporary-dining-room-melbourne-phvw-vp~15173340[(https://www.houzz.com.au/photos/wheelers-hill-project-contemporary-dining-room-melbourne-phvw-vp~15173340) [https://www.houzz.com.au/photos/wheelers-hill-project-contemporary-dining-room-melbourne-phvw-vp~15173334[(https://www.houzz.com.au/photos/wheelers-hill-project-contemporary-dining-room-melbourne-phvw-vp~15173334) [https://www.houzz.com.au/photos/vaucluse-residence-i-contemporary-living-room-sydney-phvw-vp~10839233[(https://www.houzz.com.au/photos/vaucluse-residence-i-contemporary-living-room-sydney-phvw-vp~10839233) [https://www.houzz.com.au/photos/the-boulevard-contemporary-dining-room-melbourne-phvw-vp~3024359[(https://www.houzz.com.au/photos/the-boulevard-contemporary-dining-room-melbourne-phvw-vp~3024359) Good luck. Comments (15)We removed one wall of our kitchen and love the effect. But it did require an expensive combination of 2 steel beams (ground floor of 2 storey house). This means we have beams encased in plasterboard now, one we made into a light box sort of thing by including down lights and centering it over the bench. We have high ceilings so the beams are not an issue for us but be aware of this possibility. Also was not cheap and required an engineer to design and sign off. But for us, well worth the effort. In your scenario I am assuming you have no option to include a window or 2 in the wall where the stairs are. The original plan seemed to include windows there (I think), suggesting it's possible??? That may be a very good option if it's possible, also allowing cross breezes to be captured; precious things indeed! I agree with others that the dark leather chairs - which look enormous - are a huge part of the problem you have. I would get those out of the room while you consider what to do, otherwise you'll be spending a lot of money just to overcome your furniture choice. A smaller, light coloured suite and a coat of paint to the walls could give an entirely different feel to the room....See MoreBalancing colours and finishes - Kitchen/Living Area
Comments (3)I'd start saving some inspo pics here on Houzz so you can see the common threads of what you like. Then I'd pay a few hundred dollars to have a design consultation. In your area you will have a range of choices....See MoreDark colours for kitchen - help!
Comments (8)Thank you to everyone who has commented - it is really lovely and so useful to have such thoughtful and encouraging comments! annab1997, the natural white is very yellow against the essastone sample we have, but does seem to work with the ticking. I'm trying a half strength version to see if that works - I also need to try it in the actual kitchen space but can't get in until the weekend (it is a building site). We don't really have any wall space in the kitchen/dining to paint as the wall opposite is full length windows. This provides loads of light to the island, but not much passing through to the back wall of the kitchen. Those small sections we do have - to the right of the bifolds on the picture - will either be in ticking (a great background to some of our artworks) or in the colour we paint the cupboards. I will definitely give the Resene colours a go as well as the Whisper White....See Moremaiteoz
