Comments (12)Yes, rake the needles (and gravel) onto the path, before improving the soil, and periodically during the off-season for the flowering plants. They tend to restrict growth and do not add to the appearance of the foliage or flowers, don't you agree? Not sure what does well in your area, but here's a list to take to your garden center that might brighten your day, and cover the ground. Cotoneaster dammeri, Juniperus conferta 'Blue Pacific", Euonymus fortunei 'Coloratus", Asperula odorata, Dianthus gratianopolitanus "Bath's Pink", Adiantum pedatum, Ophiopogon japonicus, Parthenocissus tricuspidata or quinquefolia (I forget which one climbs up the trees, but get the other one), Most of the above will do well in any pH soil, so don't be afraid to sweeten it, if advised to locally. I would not plant all these together, but you have plenty of room to match up good companions in each area. Some, like the junipers like a little more sun to make you smile. That should get you started in covering the ground. The local folks will be eager to sweeten the list, I am sure. Enjoy the process. Involve your family and friends. Comments (42)Hi Katrina, In the rooms (in my SIL house) that throw that green cast they have a neutral carpet. There is A LOT of light in this particular area of the house, so I do believe that impacts the undertone. In my own house, I also have very bright rooms, large windows, westerly facing. We went NWH. Now what is interesting is in one room (the brightest room) it looks bright and white and in the other room which is adjacent and still a bright room but have sheers over window, it looks darker. I like a bright white room but the SM H/Q threw that weird green cast in my house. I prefer the NW because it has a warmer feel to it whilst still is a nice, white colour. I have light flooring also. Truly, its so difficult and far from an exact science because so much influences the colour in your own home. I'm not sure what the NW would look like next to the SM, but if the rooms are not open plan, I don't know if most people would tell. We painted the bedrooms (I think from memory) Lexicon Q and I don't find it jarring, they are just in a different part of the house and we needed a different white. Good luck, finding the right white is a journey! With kindness, SB....See MoreI live in a Mid-Century Modern house that requires some new flooring.
Comments (8)Nathan - they are great tiles. From my own experience with tiles like this I would be keeping them as they are of good quality and will last forever. There are various qualities of engineered floorboards, ranging from the cheap and nasty to the beautiful and expensive. However all of them will be thicker than your tiles, especially if you need a floor-levelling compound for the old slab. Larger format tiles tend to be thicker, so if you are going to use tiles then look at small format tiles. Don't try to match, but find something small and thin that complements. Have a look at these which are thinner than your existing tiles, and a good tiler will be able to lay them level with your existing tiles: https://www.oldeenglishtiles.com.au/collections/contemporary-tessellated-patterns/products/hexagon-150mm?variant=8202164142196 There are other shapes and colours available that won't detract from what you currently have, and will complement the rest of your mid-century modern home without the change in level.
