Timber deck or tiled concrete patio?
Comments (8)Hi, why don't you have a think about installing composite decking which will allow you to be level with the door sill without the worry of run-off into the house due to the 5mm gap between the boards. Composite doesn't required coating so the maintenance issues are significantly less, just a hose down and sweep or mop with water. You would still need to excavate approx. 250mm below the finished deck level to allow for the sub-frame but if you use treated pine framing with, either H4 stumps in concrete, or galvanised stirrups to anchor the framing into the soil. Check with your local decking pro for further advice and brand options. Generally, the USA made composites like Trex or Timbertech are better quality and the concealed fixing systems are easy to install. Your soil type may be the only issue with water, ie clay which retains water, or sand which tends to drain more quickly. Comments (22)yes, lots of glass..a couple of suggestions to the south side, change double glass doors to timber, matching the garage door, keeping the sidelight windows. Landscaping will definitely help, perhaps a timber screen could be used as well. I think if you stick with the original design, and enhance it with double glazing will work wonders. The sunroom can be extended out to give more space, make a side door to access the courtyard, and possibly another side door to access the patio behind the garage. I wouldn't mess with trying to turn the courtyard into living space, can gym equipment be setup in the garage? Not sure the rules about doors opening onto a spa in the courtyard either..it could be subject to restrictions....See MoreNeed landscaping ideas please.
Comments (5)Having undergone the same process in the past 12 months (and discovering that the entire cost can be very expensive), I'd suggest bluestone pavers for the concrete edge with a rounded coping (edge), merbau decking to fence and use the same material for retaining walls. Glass fencing is the trend but you'd get away with the cheaper option of metal fencing plus less cleaning! For plants, consider the splash zone and pool water type (salt or chlorine?) as well as spreading of roots (some bamboos are renowned for damaging pools and plumbing!) and leaf litter in/around the pool. Unfortunately unless you've got carpentry and paving skills, it will cost you. I did the planting myself but was ~$15k for smaller area but all bluestone + glass fencing for a 9x4m pool in Melbourne. Good luck with your choices - it makes a huge difference to the enjoyment of the pool to finish it off properly :-)...See MorePool landscaping when have brick coping
Comments (7)Composite decking gets very very hot in the summer sun, so I would definitely steer away from that- I know it looks good, but there are a number of beautiful Aussie hardwoods and gums that would look amazing and could 'float' over top of the coping with that modern serviceable decking look. Some well thought out tiling could also look good- but the heat will still be a big consideration. Remember metals in natural stones and plastics heat up in radiant sun, whereas timber tends to just warm slightly and not get 'burny' hot....See MoreJuliet Docherty
