I would not worry about rug. it will bring warmth in your pale color pallet. maybe you can take coastal feel with little bit of "world traveler's feel and add some more "oriental" or "ethnic" marine theme related artifacts or accessories. which will bring together your style.

Sorry Cassandra, been working! What about the colour Ridge in the New Sunrise range. It's not as stark as Valley, has a lighter appearance, still in the darker colour range, but with adding wood and copper etc, I think it'd look great and tie in nicely. Best bet is to get your local carpet shop to lend you a sample (if they do that) for a few days and put it under the drapes. You'll be able to see how it looks at night as well as daytime. While you're at it, get a sample of colour Paua in either the Detroit (28oz), Columbia (36oz), Golden Bay/ Alabama (55oz), or Wattle Bay (70oz). The weight is indicative of price, also depth/height, or plushness if you like, of the different names I've listed. FYI, New Sunrise is a 44oz, to give a comparison. I've seen Wattle Bay Paua installed with beige-y curtains, and looks amazing. If you have a darker colour at the bottom (floor) and lighter colours on walls, ceilings, it gives the place a "grounded" look.

The blue you add has to be very soft and beachy and I find looks stunning with brown but as I said HAS to be kept soft would work as well with the earthy beige/sand tone as well as the white, once again it has to be something you love and are happy with so bring home swatches or keep an eye on pinterest as well as Houzz pics to see if you can find similar, it's your home and space it has to feel like you and make you happy perhaps even get some paint swatches to play about with...I know changing things is a big decision so good luck again.

i was thinking of a tufted rug that looks like thick carpet for the floor.. can be tedious but not difficult to do and years ago we had a coloured sheep (called Neville Ram!) and i used his handspun wool to knit a collection of different patterned squares that i made into a lovely throw rug that is a permanent reminder of dear old Neville
