What should we do with our L-shaped courtyard?
Comments (79)Lovely area! You have done a great job! Just a thought i would have put decking to one side and only had one side with stone and plants as putting the decking in the middle looks like a runway. Just my opinion. Black stone would look great instead of white. And painting the back bricks would have been better with a darker colour to make timber "pop" like the colour of your fence or black like the posts. Loving your ideas and transformation is fantastic!...See MoreWhat can we do with the front of our new home?
Comments (11)Sydney is out of my comfort zone for plant naming. I would still use the line of trees on RHS of driveway. I would clear the area on the left also. Consider tall trees towards the front of your property with open crowns. Double storied homes need tree height to provide balance. Closer to home maybe one or 2 smaller deciduous trees to give shade in summer. Retain the LHS of driveway with large embedded rocks. Maybe only native Lomandra with only 1 variety in pockets in the rocks. Very simple concept, but I believe will add real value to a good home. Please bear in mind that this advice is from a photo only....See Morewhat colours should we paint our house?
Comments (2)There is an abundance of whites/light grey around. Windspray is a Colorbond colour and looks really good. Timeless Grey is also quite good nice. Shale grey is very pale almost white and again really good looking. My suggestion to a client is to choose something else aside from grey however. Unless there aren't any grey houses close by of course. We all seem to be a bit 'safe' with our colour choices which is unfortunate. My own house is grey but when I did it there were no other grey houses around.... anywhere! One of my clients went with 'Poppy Pink' another went with 'Vanessa Mae'. Fabulous colours without being eye searing. Unfortunately I don't have any good pictures....See MoreShould we knock down the wall in our lounge room?
Comments (24)Hi Mad S - I like many of the ideas above! There will be in fact many things you could do to introduce a more open plan feel to the kitchen/living/dining, and so I would invest in some architectural or interior design advice to provide a masterplan for you so you can stage improvements as you can afford them. For example, it's always ideal to know where north is when making changes, and changes to open up the kitchen and introduce an island bench will vastly improve the feel of the open space, however you may want to add a walk-in pantry given you have the floor space available (only if you want one though). The gas fire would be in the wrong spot when opening up the space, however there is no reason to throw it away - you could move it to a centrally along the same line, or even along the main external living wall. I would keep that small portion of wall parallel to the front door (or extend it slightly/ replace with screen or joinery) to provide the discreet screening you need for a front door, and I would also move the rumpus door down this end so that you have a closed corner to the 'dining' space - so people don't have to walk through all the time and freeing up your options for furniture arrangements. You could even at a later stage aim to upgrade the doors along the living room external wall to the outdoor entertaining area for better indoor-outdoor connection, especially if this was north and you move the fireplace to be in front of full-height glazing. Good Luck!...See Moresiriuskey
