what kind of wood is this table?

Hi there
I bought this huge 3 m long table for a bargain price and now don’t know what to do to make it looks more modern ?
Can I sand the top and paint the base in black or should chalk paint the all table?
Really don’t like the red colour on it

Comments (22)I've had quite a bit of fun today moving furniture around to try out everyone's wonderful ideas. I have decided that the dining room needs to stay where it is, as it doesn't quite work with the hall which adjoins. I have moved the china cabinet over to the smaller wall though, as someone suggested and added a house plant here and there - it looks right. Not sure yet if I will go for a large buffet or a reading nook, but a large rug for the dining area is definite, as is art on that large wall. Comments (21)I have miles of decking at two houses. All timber when put in the Australian sun will suffer. When building our beach house we decided to go for Spotted Gum and let it grey. Why fight it? We applied Cutek, and will on a regular basis. At our main house we have lots of Merabu or Quilla. Will not grey the same, and leaches lots of red stain. Cheap, but would not use again. What ever you use, use a good quality oil that seeps deep into the wood not a traditional stain/or top finishing product....See Morewhat kind of bedside tables?

3 years agoI did a bit of stripper on the top of the table, to try discover what kind of timber it is.
I reckon is American oak. Any suggestions?
