free standing privacy screen

Hi all,
I Want to put up a privacy screen along my side fence to block out neighbours. Then o want to plant lily pillys in front of screen, so it’s a double screen. Is this crazy? I really need to block them out :/ How close to the fence can I build this? Like do I have to leave a gap? I’m in Melbourne. Cheers

It is unfortunate that Ficus Hillii hybrids are being pushed by landscapers. The root system of all ornamental figs is bad. The Flash variety is just a smaller version of Ficus microcarpa which is a massive tree. They ALL have roots that cause severe structural damage to homes, pools, driveways, walls etc. As a very experienced garden designer, I have seen too many instances of considerable structural problems caused by this plant family. Beware.

if you can't install a permenant fence on the boundary and you can't plant into the paving, what about try some long narrow pots standing parallel to the back of the little hedge, fill them with a layer of pebbles for drainage, a layer of soil to plant some potato vine or similar and use the pots as support for panels of framed lightweight lattice to make a tall fence inside your garden, not on the boundary, a mastching gate across the steps and the porch should screen out all the neighbours...instant screen from your side and removeable if/when needed

tall shrubs would be great ..check with local nursery for suitable pittosporums or similar but a simple pergola made out of treated pine built across the yard with taller rear posts sloping down to lower front posts and with roof and back wall covered with black sarlon cloth would be the quickest and neatest until some climbers could grow..the black sarlon is see through close up but is a great block out screen from a distance and makes a great shade house for plants and people but you would need to check with your local Council to make sure that any structure is legal..you can work out the best height by standing back and have someone hold a broom up next to the corner post to see how high you need to go to block out the view up to the neighbours' gutters ..but, is that a back verandah on your house? as that height looks like it might be ok and the size of the pergola depends on how you would use the space underneath

Sorry no help here.....Have you used the bath yet? I would be concerned that if the bath is not level on the tiles, that, when full of water, and people, the bath will move off the wall on side and the back. The bathroom looks Interesting, but that small gap between wall and bath, is very troublesome. If you put a shelf there, it will become even harder to clean.

Thanks, I’ll check out Chippeys. I’m wondering about regulations for height, as it would need to be close to 3m to block them out. They are driving me completely spare. I think I’ll need to ask the council as I can’t find anything online regarding height etc and the neighbours won’t be happy so I think I need to stick to the rules.

Generally Councils have roughly a 1.8m height restriction. You can go higher with council permits, neighbour agreement and engineering plans. Sounds like a hedge would be the way to go if you have room - way better view than a fence but takes time to grow.

Years ago we built a free standing screen around 3 sides of our pool, It was flush up to the existing timber fence, with 200 x 200 treated pine posts that had framed trellis that was approx 600 taller then the fence. we did it this way so that we had control over the trellis. This was in Sydney, you would need to check with council re boundary fence height and building code. This won't stop noise just visuals, can you get your neighbours approval to build it and let them know that you are prepared to cover the costs this would make it much easier to do. Good Luck

You need to check local controls. It may also depend on the percentage of the boundary being covered and how close to the boundary.

can you share some photos of the sides of your house and be more specific about the problem.. what about external blinds or shutters to your side windows or shade cloth attached under your gutters and also to the fence would still allow walking distance on your side and be a cheap quick option while you work on a more attractive solution and what is the distance from the side of your house to the dividing fences? ..
