Cost effective options for keeping exposed beams

Hi,

We're looking for a way to keep the exposed beam look, but clean up and lighten the surfaces of the beams.

We love the character the exposed beams in our open plan living space provide. However, we hate the fact they are painted and they are very rough sawn, attracting lots of dust and cobwebs.

We are currently planning an extensive renovation and hope to find a cost effective way to address the beams.

The 5 beams in question are about 4.3m long, about 20cm deep and 3cm wide. There are battens above to which the ceiling is attached between the beams. There is insulation between the battens and colourbond roofing attached to the top of the battens.

We anticipate replacing the ceiling and insulation during the renovation.

One solution that has been proposed is to simply enclose the beams entirely: attach battens to the underside of the beams, install extra insulation between the beams and the ceiling to the underside of the new battens.

We would prefer to keep the exposed beam look if practical and not prohibitively expensive. It would be a bonus if we could increase the insulation a bit too.

Sanding the beams back sufficiently to remove the paint does not seem practical. So I expect we would need to clad the beams in some manner.

Could we simply attach 4.3m long, 10cm wide, 2cm thick pine battens to the faces of the beams and a strip of veneer to the underside? Then perhaps sit a floating ceiling on top of the battens.

Are there better solutions where we keep the exposed beam look but clean up the surfaces of the beams?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.
