Carpet should have ratings including for wear. Compare you options

Thanks Kate for your response. The carpet has a six star heavy duty rating plus stairs although if you gently rub your hand over the surface of the carpet it starts to Matt. While I realise wool carpet will release fibres over time this carpet seems overly sensitive to any sort of friction so I therefore wonder how it will perform on stairs as the same area will constantly be exposed to wear.

I think you’ve answered your own question. If you have concerns now and you can see the backing when bent, as per your stairs, then it’s not the product for your situation. I’ve always been a natural fibre person but I think I’d choose a Solution Dyed Nylon (if I ever gave up my hardwood floors). The modern versions can look as good as wool but with much more durability.

Thank you bigreader. i appreciate you taking the time to provide feedback. It is such a hard choice. I do like the solution dyed nylon for its serviceability however I am looking for a loop pile and I am yet to find a solution dyed nylon loop pile that i think looks good. I find the solution dyed nylons in the cut piles are great options but in the loop piles-not so much.

Hi Davia, I had that exact carpet and never again. It had a constant layer of fluff no matter what you did to it and after only two years I wanted to chuck it out. I am now getting Hycraft Carramar which has a much tighter loop. Solution dyed nylon will wear much quicker than a loop wool so I definitely wouldn’t use that particularly on stairs.

Thanks J AH79 for that feedback. Thank you for validating my initial suspicions about the carpet. Today I spoke to the salesman about my concerns and after some research he told me that the type of loop and the preparation of the yarn for that carpet underwent a different process than for the carpets that seemed to fluff less. The loops in the carpet were also much looser contributing to the effect. It now makes more sense to me why the carpet seems to fluff so much. While it may not bother some I think the fluffing would make me feel like the carpet was never clean. Interestingly the Hycraft Carramar was our second option. That does have nice tight loops. I may have to go and look at it again. Thanks so much for sharing your experience with the carpet. It has been most helpful to me.
