Californian Bungalow Transformation

“The good room” at the front of our client’s Californian bungalow was underused overlooked and uninspiring.

The brief for the space was to turn it into a grown-up space (there are other rooms that children can play in) that was beautiful to look at from the front door and somewhere cosy to catch up with friends when they visit. We needed to work with a furniture layout that would complement the fireplace as the focal point. As with many of our clients, the more seating we add to the space the better. This led us to design a space with a sofa, two armchairs and a bespoke bench seat that could also function as a coffee table.

On the wall opposite the large picture window, we specified a floral photograph (with art glass to reduce the reflections) that we then used as colour inspiration for the fabric on the sofa. We selected a fabric that is both pretty and practical, a low-maintenance velvet. All other fabrics selected in the room – armchairs, bench seat and cushions, were then more neutral tones so they wouldn’t compete with the sofa and wall art, but with lovely details such as contrast piping on the armchairs and black frames to the bench seat, floor lamp and picture frame.

To draw your attention back to the fireplace area, we added a round mirror and styled the mantelpiece with pieces that repeated the colours in the room.

The space is now welcoming and inviting, with plenty of space to entertain family and friends.
