Oil based primer not dry after a week

Melbourne, Australia.

I thinly brushed on primer plain scotia quads with Dulux 3-in-1 primer and turpentine.

Window and doors have been opened all week.

Weather has been wet, cool, sometimes warm and sunny.

I can still leave nail marks in parts.

Should I just strip and sand it, and use water based?

I want to gun spray paint after 2 coats of primer.

Scotia is being colour matched to glossy kitchen cabinets, to cover hybrid flooring gaps.

Why did you add turpentine to the Dulux product? Has Melbourne’s weather been within the specifications for the Primer? I would have thought it was a bit damp for it. I’d give the Dulux helpline a call before you do anything. On another note I’d have matches the scotia to the floor colour not the cabinetry.

@bigreader I added mineral turpentine to make brushing smoother (it's within specifications).

I've had issues with drying Dulux oil based paints (spraying) with both turp and thinner. Even when the weather is warmer. I might have to brush even thinner layers. Right now this first layer of primer has dried in most spots. I don't know how to speed up the drying. Would a fan help? I prefer matching to cabinets, looks more like a feature than an add-on to tidy up work.

Hi Fiona. Those boards were replaced after initial build (after installing new wider slider), so that’s why they were lighter. It was weathered and needing a clean and recoil there. I took cutek’s (expensive)advice and started with quik clean (loosens dirt which was evidently incorporated into my layers of oil), then followed with pro clean (timber brightener). I scrubbed my butt off and was still not happy with the result. It just didn’t evenly clean it up, and I used fairly concentrated doses, and got down on my knees to scrub, not just a brush on a long stick. I oiled with cutek extreme (instead of cd50). Some more pics, after scrubbing then after oiling (still dark). I did redo my handrail in johnstones deck oil, and it appears to be lasting well, no peeling... but I’m still a bit cautious about risking my deck with this finish (water based over oil). I think I’d prefer dirty weather deck than a peeling finish. Next house I’m only having timber deck if it’s entirely undercover!! Do you have a similar dilemma?

Feast Watson kitchen oil is 30-60 % petroleum naphtha. This maybe the reactionary problem. Ok time to fix. Sanding back starting with 120 grit and go through the grades...180, 240,320. Sand with the grain until you feel that all the blemishes are removed. Sounds daunting but the first strike with the sand paper is psychologically the most difficult. I'd stick to the Tung oil base and use Organoil danish oil. Brush on rub off with a clean rag. Let dry, sand back lightly, this time with 400grit and reapply oil and rub off. Let it cure for a couple of days and you should be good to go. Livos Kunos oil is also an option and would only take a 120 grit sand, apply, rub off. Let that dry for a day sand with 320 and reapply and rub off. The only problem is it is an expensive oil.

Do you think sanding or stripping would be better/easier? It's quite a lot and it is peeling off. It seems the painter may have primed the front of the doors, but not the back and frames. AAAARGH!@! I think I'll have to remove paint from front back and sides. Every time I asked a question about what he was doing, he just told me he was the professional (and you can guess the rest). Maybe he thought at 75 years of age I wouldn't notice, but my eyesight is excellent so he hasn't.

If you have a dehumidifier I’d try that but a fan may also help. I live in a similar climate to Melbourne in SW VIC and haven’t had that problem with Dulux products which is what I generally use at home. The next four days is meant to be quite wet so be patient. Scotia is always going to look like an add on because it is - not necessarily a bad thing, it’s common with floating floors. Sometimes you have to have functionality over looks.
