From a practical point of view, the solid panel will block dogs view. Is that good or bad.

The two doors opposite each other in the hallway should be the same. Both are living areas not bedrooms, so glass panel will be fine. Personally I would do the 10 panels. You do not have high ceilings so having the lower part of the door solid may not be appealing as glass. It may reduce the visual height of doorway.

Good point about the glass panels making the hallway appear higher. The room opposite the main living room will be used as a guest bedroom at times, hence my worry about it being a glass door with 10 panels. Would it be better to do the same 10 panels but just solid timber

Glass panel for when it is a study room. Install a Pull down blind for when it is a bedroom.....

Have you considered the total width of the new opening, it would appear that you would need to open both doors to walk through which will be annoying

Is that 2 x 820 doors plus door jam at the end of the passage?, I agree with Kate that the solid panel would block the dogs view and could end up being scratched.

And unless you need light into the right hand guest room a would go with plain solid doors, one set of French doors at the end of the passage will be a feature, but that's just my thought

You mentioned that the door and ceiling were standard heights but didn't mention the width.

The doors, as I understand are for the lounge room and study guest room on either side of the hallway, not hallway opening that leads to the rest of the house.

That's correct. Once you open the front door you are in the hallway. There will be french doors to the left, and to the right will be the study/guest bedroom door.

Directly opposite the front door will be open, no door, this is so that the hallway looks more open.

I have attached a photo of the demo we have done. What do you think about this as an option (see inspiration photo attached) --> glass panels on the side and above the doors with the french doors in the middle.

You could be right I read it as "The Hall Door" at the end as per the second photo, showing the wall being removed on both sides of the existing door. If the French doors are for the Living and Guest bedroom/study, it looks like they will be different widths so they wouldn't match anyways

sorry cross over, did you consider that by removing the existing door at the end of the passageway that will funnel noise through the house. If you are going with two sets of French doors opposite each other they should be the same width.

So now that we have this opening I love the idea of the two french doors that swing open and then one section of glass on either side. Do the sections of glass need to be the same size as the french doors? I'd imagine yes?

Another question I have is around the placement of the light switch. My husband and I have very different opinions on this. I think it should be hidden and placed inside the room, but he thinks that unless it's right next to the door (i.e. like a bedroom light), then it should be placed outside the room. I just don't want it to be in plain sight.

Any thoughts on its placement? If we placed it on the outside I think it would be to the right of the front door.

Please tell us how wide the opening is, into the lounge room for these French doors. Then we can give more informed suggestions.

I would prefer the light switch accessible BEFORE walking into the room. Otherwise you are walking in the dark. Why not have dual switches, one inside the room and one in the hall. If your sitting in the room and it gets dark you then have to walk outside the room to put the light on. Dual switches would be best.

We have 3300mm to work with

I prefer picture number 2. I recommend, 820 x 2 doors, and even up the rest with fixed windows either side. All 10 pane windows.

I prefer number 2 as well but without the glass window bulkhead

I like both 1 and 2 but would definitely do 1 if I had a dog to avoid nose marks on glass.

I would love some help with lighting for this room!

These are my thoughts so far,
- one wall light on either side of the bay windows (yellow)
- 4 down lights (green)
- 2 down lights that operate independently on either side of the fireplace (blue)

Whilst I would love a centre light, given our ceiling height of 2400mm, I'm worried that this won't work and will crowd the space.

If you are sitting at night you want lights behind you and lamps work well for that. When I bought my house most rooms had no ceiling lights at all. And the lounge lamp PowerPoint was hooked to the light switch In lounge I added a pendant for look (2700 ceiling) but only turn it on for cleaning. Think about how you will use the lights. Where will you want to turn them on and off. Hope this thought train helps.
