1950s weatherboard house extension - is it possible?

We have purchased a 1950s, small weatherboard home as our first home to live in. We are trying to figure out what our options are in terms of improvement. The land is just under 600m2, rectangle shaped, and long/narrow with a N-S aspect. The rear of the house faces north, while the front of the house is facing south. There is also no rear neighbour, and the land is pretty flat and clear. It's a great block of land in a great location, which is why we'd like to keep it and improve/rebuild the existing house.

The house as it is is really small (see floor plans attached) and we will likely outgrow within 5 years as we are looking to start a family soon. Ideally, we'd like to do some mini renovations now just to make things comfortable for the next 5 years, and then proceed either with a KDR or home extension (if possible).

I'm unsure if we will be able to afford a full KDR, and wondering whether it would be worth doing an extension instead? I've been playing with the floorplan to try and visualise what it might look like (80m2 extension pictured). How much should we budget for such an extension, and what other factors do we need to consider?

Thank you!
