I’ve tiny on glass will help planks. I’ve resistant planks should also be specified. An eave helps and that slatted pergola looks great. Or some big sun umbrellas to give full shade

I'd say that slatted pergola would be great -- the slats are close enough together that they will stop direct light from any direction , but let enough ambient light through , and also 'air' ( yes , I know , its more perception than reality , but it is what it is ) .

Having said that , have you priced it ? You'd want pretty good quality timber without too many knots , otherwise they will warp , to get that size won't be cheap , and with all the blocks it will be relatively time consuming to make and erect -- the kind of thing an apprentice could do , but just watch you're not getting charged tradesmans charge-out rates .

Folded alloy , powdercoated , should achieve much the same result , it may look more modern ( although I quite like the wooden look , either stained or painted , but both need maintanence , whereas powdercoating not so much ) . But apart from the price of some rod and a couple of motors and wiring , you are then getting pretty close to the motorised slats , so again , do your pricing before deciding .

Thanks pottsy999..when we first did the plan we didnt think it would be this tricky. the builder recommended a roof but I’m a bit concerned about loss of light. You might be right about pricing too. would something like this work do you think? it would be more economical i would imagine..

The white pergola looks fabulous but a much cheaper and easier option would be a motorised retractable awning. we installed one over my mothers deck and she is thrilled with it, puts it out when she wants some shade in hot summer weather and still has full sun in winter when it’s appreciated.
